I have a Gold Tone and while I can't compare it to the Lebeda, it is a very nice guitar. Great tone, great finish and great playability. Much easier to play than my tricone or my biscuit.

Cool to hear someone else was first turned on to the reso sound via Faces. I also always assumed it was Ronnie Wood playing, I love his square neck playing in the Richnmond video I embedded. Another early one I remember was Clapton and Dwayne Allman on Mean Old World.

I first noticed the sound of a resonator in songs by Faces in the 60s like Mandolin Wind and this one (still one of my faves)
I didn't know what it was, but I knew I liked it!

Another vote for Stellas. I bought 2 for dirt cheap. One is pretty much original and the other I kinda restored. I also put a homemade piezo tab pick-up (about $5 total) in it and it sounds great! They both have a great kinda RJ tone with light strings and a slide.

I recently did the same thing. I bought a couple of cheap beat-up Stellas and set them up for bottleneck. I had fun fixing them up. I put bone nuts and better bridge/saddles on them and play them with light strings. They actually sound really good when played in the Delta style. I can get more RJ sound out of them than any of my resonators!

Just want to add my 2 cents here. As I'm reading this, I'm sitting here playing my Republic Tricone (during commercials on the tele!). I have 2 Republics and have been extremely happy with them and the service I received from Frank as I was in the buying process. I'd love to own a National some day and probably will. But these guitars fill my needs sonically and aesthetically.

I have one and I like it very much. Someday I'll have a National, but in the meantime this one's great!

I just finished a session on my Gold Tone. It really is a great guitar! It has a great feel to the neck and a super sweet tone. I also have a Republic tricone and single cone/biscuit and they are great guitars as well, but I really love the tone of a well set up Spider. The Republic RS1-E is a very nice looking guitar as well. I'd suggest you check out the Gold Tone (be sure it has the Beard set-up, there will be a little yellow sticker visible thru one of the sound holes if it does) or the Republic.

A friend's tricone had a horrible rattle/buzz a while back. We opened it up and found one of the 2 mushrooms had shifted slightly and was causing the noises. We popped it out, put a couple drops of wood glue on it and wedged it back into place. Been perfect ever since!

I have a couple Republics and the posts I've seen where the Continental cones were replaced with Nationals have been luke-warm as to the results. The Continental cones are regarded as being good cones and most people didn't notice a big difference it seems. I like the way my Resolian sounds, but I did see an interesting thread on another board saying that taping up the holes in the soundwell made a big difference. I have not opened mine up but there are apparently 8-10 holes around the soundwell and supposedly taping the upper and lower ones and leaving the bass and treble side holes open made the most improvements. I think the poster used that aluminum tape that AC installers use. Maybe someone has tried this....

Interesting topic. I just fixed up a 60's vintage Stella for playing bottleneck style, and put a home made Piezo pick up in it. Made the pick up from the little speaker salvaged from a musical greeting card and playing it thru a Roland Micro cube, it sounds awesome! Can I hook a mic to my Mirco Cube and play my resos thru it with decent results? I know I can run a mic thru the Micro Cube, just wondering how it would sound. That little Roland Micro Cube is amazing and will run forever on 6 AA batteries! What would be a good mic (type and brand) to use with my resos?

New here, 1st post. Great info on the site. I have a question regarding this topic. When I change strings on one of my resonators I sometimes want to oil my fretboard as well. I usually remove all but 2 of the strings (usually leave on 3 and 5 and they remain tensioned) so I can get at the freytboard with the oil more easily. Is this OK to do?
