The new Dobro Hound Dog resos are made in China and reviews are mixed on quality. The "made in the USA" Hound Dog is made in Nashville by Gibson's Original Instrument division and is about $1500US. It has an embossed logo that says "Original Hound Dog". The Chinese Dobros have a Dobro decal on them.
If you are looking at Hound Dogs, am I correct in assumimg you want a round neck with a spider bridge/cone set-up? If that is the case, I would suggest you get a Goldtone with a Beard setup. Paul Beard designed these and has them built in China, but the Beard Goldtones are set up by luthiers in the US and get superior quality Beard made cones, spiders and nuts. The Beard Gold Tones are about $750US and are the best you can get without going to a high-end builder and spending $2000 or more.

I did see at the Gold Tone site that there are dealers in the UK who carry Gold Tone instruments. Check out www.goldtone.com

Are you sure you want a 'dobro' - a spider cone wooden resonator? Why not consider something like a Busker Cannon. It is a parlour sized wooden bodied resonator, but with the biscuit bridge. Click to hear one being played

Thanks for your replies.
Yes, I am looking for a Dobro type guitar.
Michael has published a good review of an earlier Regal and I think the one with a new cone should be worth testing if I can find one.
I will also see if anyone in London has a Gold Tone.
I guess from the unfavourable reviews that the new Gibson Dobros should be avoided even though it has the label.

I just finished a session on my Gold Tone. It really is a great guitar! It has a great feel to the neck and a super sweet tone. I also have a Republic tricone and single cone/biscuit and they are great guitars as well, but I really love the tone of a well set up Spider. The Republic RS1-E is a very nice looking guitar as well. I'd suggest you check out the Gold Tone (be sure it has the Beard set-up, there will be a little yellow sticker visible thru one of the sound holes if it does) or the Republic.

Hiya,
I got a Regal RD40 squareneck a while back...doesn't have the Quarterman cone (I don't think anyway) but it's a good guitar, certainly for the price...I'm very happy with it....and especially since I got my pickup system sorted out - I've combined the Fishman Nashville Series Spider Bridge pickup with the active circuitry that comes with the Fishman Active reso pickup...top-notch results...not the cheapest way of doing it but it gets a great (and consistent) sound with very little fuss...plug and play.
