I too have recently been listening to Fred. These recordings from 1962 are among my favorite by him.For me he follows very closely to blind Willie Johnson.Similar playing on spirituals.Very beautiful. Attachments:

If the guitar is a genuine parlor-very small.Or a pre war parlor I would not play on too heavy a gauge.I have several pre war parlor and i use Newtone heritage string 11 guage. They have low tension and are kind to old guitars. They are great sounding on my old stella and regal. eggy

Hi Pete, Henry Townsend isn`t playing quills. The musician you are thinking of is Henry Thomas i think?.I have studied Henry Thomas guitar but never approached his quills. Henry Townsend is a wonderful St.Louis bluesman who does play mostly in"crossnote"tuning. In his prewar records he has just one song played in "spanish" the rest in"crossnote". I truly would not know where to start with quills .It would sound wonderful though Pete. Thanks Eggy.

Rather than to concentrate on one song i often fixate on an artist. I am currently working on Henry Townsend and William Harris(i love the "Heavy"time he has).Of course for me Charlie Patton is always an ongoing learning process too. I play Bukka White"sic`em dogs"in "crossnote",interesting to see Gaucho play in spanish.I love for people to do their own thing. Eggy

I have been to listen to many recordings of banjo this week.A guilty secret of mine.I like clawhammer and old time banjo. Been listening to Roscoe Holcomb,Doc Boggs,Tommy Jarrell(my own favourite)and a man called Morgan Sexton a beautiful cd called"shady grove".Also an older Yazoo Box called "Kentucy Mountain music" a collect of 7cd`s with great banjo and stringbands. Eggy.

Michael, I agree that Willie Johnson is just about Peerless as a slide guitar player. His recorded work is beautiful slide and non slide.I have listened for many years and always find myself returning to the record and hearing something new. Also such a singer what a voice one of the best. Blueshome,Hello and thank you for confirming the vastapol on Willie`s non-slide songs.I was not 100 per cent if it was right and am happy you point this out for me.Thank you also for pointing to weenie campbell.I shall check out the thread you say.Thank you. eggy

I`ve been listening a lot to the non slide records of Blind Willie Johnson. Sometimes looked over,of course his slide overshadow these songs. I love the rain don`t fall on me ,especially when Willie comes in too early with his Vocal at a point.Wonderful.I try to play his non slide songs been playing them all in vastapol. eggy
