Here's a twist on the the "What are you Listening to" Thread.
I'm working on trying to pull "The Ballad of Curtis Lowe" together in and a Shuffle/Blues version of "Matchbox," come to think of I've also been messing with JJ Cale's "Call me the Breeze" - nice rhythm runs on the bass strings if you can pull them out. All in Open D.
I also worked something out for George's "Willin" in Open G recently.

Working on Fred McDowell material mainly in open E vestapol and open A spanish using both the original recordings, Tom Feldmann's excellent lesson on him and using MIchael Messer's DVD as further reference on the North Hill rhythms. (Vintage Stella, Silvertone)
Vestapol - Working on new Blind Willie Johnson's song - Need Somebody on My Bond. (Vintage Kay, Silvertone)
Also working on some basic non-slide standard tuning piedmont, Mississippi John Hurt style picking pieces- Freight Train, Railroad Bill, Cocaine Blues, Furry Lewis' Stack O Lee, Mance Lipscomb's Sugar Babe. (1990 Gibson Nick Lucas Reissue)

Blind Boy Fuller's Truckin' my blues away and Meat Shakin' Woman. Columbia 1910's parlour guitar.
I usually am in open G (capoed 2nd or 3rd fret for Robert Johnson's stuff...) but with BBF I'm rediscovering standard tuning!
Addictive, wonderful music, that could seem quite simple, but every time you play it, you realize how intricate and challenging it is.

When I said open G I forgot to say, tuned down to the key of E. Drinking Muddy Water, Sleeping in a Hollow Log is another I've been playing around with. Love that one, especially Mississippi Fred M's (slightly different) version. C C Rider is another Fun One to play around with. Anyone familiar with the Old Crow Medicine Show's version? Good stuff.

Rather than to concentrate on one song i often fixate on an artist. I am currently working on Henry Townsend and William Harris(i love the "Heavy"time he has).Of course for me Charlie Patton is always an ongoing learning process too. I play Bukka White"sic`em dogs"in "crossnote",interesting to see Gaucho play in spanish.I love for people to do their own thing. Eggy

I agree with eggy's approach to learning. I have always worked in this way, studying the whole repertoire of a musician is the only way to get inside their style and understand how they play.

Well for me I'm working on Jitterbug swing (catfish style) and getting over the hurdle that is trying to sing at the same time!
I'm also working in a parallel electric universe on my RGT grades being the fresh faced guitarist that I am!

Nice thread this! I often just sit an doodle and see what comes, see what something sounds close too and follow the path from there on in. If it starts coming naturally, I find that it runs easy and it's easier to fit in with the rest of the song or work. Hope that makes sense to the normal folks on the forum.
