I made a test from my stella - has a Mcdowell rhythm lick that I learned from Michael Messer and it's combined with an attempt at Fred McDowell's John Henry that I learned starting with SGGW and then moved forward to the original recordings.
Pretty encouraged by progress - six months ago I tried recording John Henry and when I played it back I could barely tell what song it was, lawd lawdy.
Not so much a song, but trying lap style for the first time. I picked up a 1934 Supertone 200 for a reasonable price, and it was played lap style (there isn't even a lower strap button hole), so I pulled out a Lap Dawg Tonebar I have and tried. Taking a bit to get the hang of the bar. Just waiting on a nut extender.
Current playing playing blues songs I know in G. Going to take some time being comfortable playing this way.
at this moment i have in the last week started to learn kind hearted woman using the Tom Feldman guitar of Robert Johnson D.V.D. Series,i have tried other methods but there is something that has just clicked with me,so much so i am thinking of getting the Fred McDowell D.V.D series by the same person.

That sure is beautiful playing Harriet, you should be well encouraged by that recording because it certainly hits the mark with me and encourages me to keep playing and persist in trying to get close to that Mississippi Fred sound. Great job and thank you.
Well thank you very much for your kind words, Nickel!
Michael Messer has been kindly teaching me some Fred Mcdowell's material among others, he taught me the Fred Mcdowell riffs in the beginning and although we didn't cover that particular song - that's was "sort of" started from elsewhere and Fred's early recordings, I applied what have learned from him in terms of rhythm, note accuracy to the piece.
I'm making good progress with a new album of mine 'plucked airs' by 'conth.vgn' Its all dobro in DADGAD (with kick drum / vocals) - most of my stuff with a few covers.
I'm doing it on this set up, which is sounding very good.
When its finished (april), I'll upload a couple of tracks... After this is done, I'll do two more albums of slide blues - 'deaf josh ferret'. Then an album of electric boogie...

TT that sounds great!
I can hear that you have worked hard on that. If it was finished I would have left it there, but as it is 'unfinished' .... for my ears the kick is too loud and the vocal is too quiet. The kick is smothering the track and your voice, which is a good vocal performance, is getting lost. I think there might be more space or air in the track with those changes.
I have a dozen or songs 'in progress' at the moment, all in Open G (because I hate retuning and I'm too lazy to get off the couch to fetch a different guitar). A good mix of songs. I've been wrestling the longest time with Dry Spell Blues (I really like CW Stoneking's version of that one)-- I know I'll get it right some day. Love in Vain and a couple others from Johnson, and other songs culled from Woody Mann's Bottleneck Blues book or Grossman's Delta Blues book. I worked out Mississippi Fred McDowell's Train I Ride on my own. And I'm working on a version of Charlie Patton's High Sheriff Blues.
I really like RL Burnside and his ilk -- love the minimalist/repetitive approach (this thread introduced me to Robert Belfour too!).
But I'm a singer first of all -- I really like songs where there's a strong melody to sink my teeth into. I like the idea of downtuning the guitar a bit suggested elsewhere in this thread, should match my voice better.
Just getting the hang of mixpad, and I've got to the stage where I can produce a tune on it. This is rough as guts - its a new riff - I need to cook it up, but what do you think so far?
