Update: I took the felt and soaked it in Woolite, gently massaging the dirt and God-knows-what-else out of it. Rinsed and laid it out and pressed it on paper towels to dry. Looks pretty good.... however, it flattened right out. I think I'll definitely try to reuse it.

OK - so how do I get the felt to stay in there in an L shape? Do I attach it to the cone and insert it or try to install the cone into it placed in the well? And is it ok to use a little glue of some sort to temporarily secure it to either?

insert code here yeah your right never seen one go horizontal! I would trim it to fit or replace it,,,,,,, if a gasket goes up the horizontal portion of the plat-form you risk it drooping down and damping the cone too much!

Well, that's how it was originally... at least in this one!
So when you say laying flat, how are you making something that's straight go in a circle without bunching up?
Maybe National ran out of green felt... anyone have a picture of what it's supposed to look like?

The 'up the wall' bit would only need to go up a mm or two - should be straightforward to manipulate. I dont think theres any real need for it to go 'up the wall' at all anyway. TT

Hi Billyclaire,
The felt must not be bunched up, it must be completely flat.
To make the felt gasket - lay the cone on a sheet of felt and draw a line around it, then cut two semi-circles and that's all there is to it. Glue them into the guitar with something removable like Spray-Mount or paper glue.

Ive seen several felt lined plat-forms over the years and they never went up the wall or side! the original felt liners were 1mm thick without any cone pressure and I suspect was squished down to very thin with cone pressure, I have located a company in Europe that makes some that thin 100% wool felt, you can PM me if you like I can send you a link,,,, www.maplesplendor.ca/felt.htm heres a link to the felt, hope this link works,,,,,,

Hi Bill, The gasket underr the coverplate doesn't affect the sound, but it can help the coverplate to sit in the correct position. All....or certainly most....Tricones were factory fitted with coverplate gaskets. I am sure that the boys at National in the 20s & 30s knew their stuff. Shine On, Michael. Hi, how is the felt gascet on a Tricone fitted? Is it just around the well´s rim ,or?

Wow not sure I would keep that one, I've never seen one like that going up the side would keep you from the slight side to side front to back adjustment of some cones and I would fear that could stiffel(sp?) the sound a bit, try and install it without the cover-plate and see what happens sound wise and all, but really it would be better if it was one continuous piece,,,,

I have been skating around this issue for a while now ..I have a new style O no gasket fitted, some time back Michael suggested that I try fitting one to soften / sweeten the sound or wait 50 years or so and let time make the change.. I have opted for fitting a gasket as I don't see me reaching my 122 birthday, with that in mind I phoned up a snooker table refurbishes and explained that I was looking for some felt and the reason why, what a helpful guy ! I am picking some felt up this Saturday from his place and will fit it next week.................... watch this space

Hope it works out for you Robbie better than it did for me! I tried pool table felt years ago the problem is its not 100% wool and it really dampened the sound way too much, even the the thinnest one available is only 19 oz,it can't be more than 1mm thick,,,

In 2003 I replaced the felt gasket in my National Havana 12 string and it has been there ever since. It was just thin green felt from a craft shop that came in 12 inch square pieces. I have no idea if it was pure wool, or partly synthetic, but it is perfect. I wouldn't have the guitar any other way.
If I find a piece of the felt in my box of bits, I will burn a corner of it. Wool will burn and smell like hair and synthetic will melt.
Shine On Michael.
