I would argue about loss of tone Michael, But the Dopera,s must have had some idea in mind for doing so,as eluded to your previous posts on felt gaskets.

I was able to salvage the original felt out of the trash and it's surprisingly intact. Gross, but intact. It isn't connected - I wonder if it tore or if it was originally like that.... I'll have to inspect it closer.

The original felt gaskets I have seen were in one piece, but cut (not a closed circle). WASH it, dry it out, and try re-installing it using some lightweight paper glue (the "glue stick" variety works well for this application). Expect the tone to be muffled and unsatisfying until the felt "beds in" - a process that can take anywhere from a week to a month, depending on how many hours a day you play it.

Hi there !
Well, I think I might give it a go on one of my Nationals. Will get me some snooker table felt and see what happens. Will do on one of my Nationals that has a NRP Hot Rod cone - so that no vintage National cones will potentially be hurt in the experiment.

snakehips,The pool table felt is too thick in my opinion better to try the craft shop variety, its something like the Mojo bags Ian supplies with the bottlenecks,,,,,,its a polyester felt not a velour type though,,

Hi there!
Will need to buy a heck of a lot of Diamond bottlenecks to get me enough Mojo bags for a 10" diameter ring of felt !!! Just awaiting Ian getting back to me on having some soda-lime bottlenecks to my preferred dimensions (still !) ; )

Also, I'm awaiting a supply of NOS Acme "Mojo Tone" resonator well-felt. Apparently, Blind Boy Fuller was an endorser of their product, despite telling his welfare supervisor that he was still out of work. Fuller favoured the purple felt as it gave a mellower tone for his Spiritual songs, than the green felt.

Steve Davis brought out his own brand of snooker-table derived resonator well felt. It didn't really sell though - as he is not that great on guitar, so couldn't generate much enthiasm in the resonator guitar world.

I would be incredibly surprised if it's anything other than normal snooker table felt rebranded...

You can buy felt sheets at most craft shops. That is what is in my 12 string Havana.
.....slightly off topic, but I can't resist. Just after the war my late father took a job at a department store in the fabric department. A lady asked my father "young man, where can I get felt please?" .....my father's reply was "come round behind the counter Madam" ......and a few minutes later he was sacked from his job. True story!
....and now back to felt gaskets in tin guitars

...wish I had seen this thread a few years ago when I removed the felt from a 32 or so duo, being under the impression that it was an artifact of amateur repair. My recollection is that it sounded better with the felt...
Reminds me of when I bought a used 1952 Gibson L7C... When I replaced the old, presumably original strings, the guitar never sounded as good as with the originals. Wish I knew what they were...

As an art teacher, I can tell you that the craft store felt is polyester and a lot of glues will not stick to it. "Real" felt is wool... and I'm sure the original felt was wool. Washing it will probably result in a circle whose diameter is about 5 inches due to shrinkage....

Your right Billy, the original felt was wool, it was a weave called "Melton" where the fabric is grinded to a fuzzy finish, most Melton woven today is pretty coarse, I've trying to find some of this stuff but to no avail, a little bit of hide glue will stick it the polyester felt though,

Hi all I just put some new strings on my MM Blues (bronze) so i thought i would try a felt gasket, its not settled in yet but already there seems to me more sustain than before and more of a ring to it and that banjoey sound has gone, not like it sounded like a banjo before but its hard to explain more like a wood bodied guitar,it will be interesting to hear what it sounds like in a few weeks once its settled in but if it improves on the sound now it will be amazing,i would be happy if it stays as it is now.let you all know in a few weeks wolvoboy
