If they were good sounding they would be in the guitars they originated in!

In my experience a repair person who likes to fit bone saddles usually doesn't know how to cut saddle slots on a resonator properly! So no ask for maple!

I hear magnetic pickup in there too,the problems with these video's is a pickup sounds good sitting in your parlor, but get out on a festival stage and it sounds like your using a chain saw! Every pickup sounds better mixed with a mic that's why after so many years I've settled on a mag pickup mixed on stage with a 57. My sound checks take only minutes and as soon as the room fills takes only a slight adjustment. Check out any video of Hans Theesink, He gets a good sound without a piezo just mag pickup and mic! my 2 cents Canadian,,,,,,,,,,,,

If you need measurements for the body taper let me know, the 12 fret Nationals had a better neck geometry because of it! \

Linkous, I am sorry, but you are wrong about that. The best National and Dobro guitars ever built were made of laminates. It would be ridiculous to call a handbuilt Fine Resophonic guitar a budget instrument, or would you? The use of laminates is because solid woods do not do the same job, it has nothing to do with costs. John Dopyera built wood bodied Triolians with laminates because it was better than using solid wood. The construction of such instruments is akin to a speaker cabinet, not an acoustic stringed instrument. A solid wood soundwell would really not be a good idea. Even the earliest square neck Tricones with wood sound wells used plywood, some were 10mm thick. Shine On Michael Of course plywood is the best material to build a guitar with, I don't argue with that either. It is easy and quick to process, with the result that it is also a much cheaper alternative to solid wood, which is welcome in mass production. So why would you work with solid wood on a guitar? In the case of a reso guitar, this is mainly a value determiner. A plank of mahogany is much more expensive, risky and also requires a lot more work. I hope I don't have to explain to you why a guitar from Fine Resophonic is more expensive than a Chinese copy? Moreover Fine Resophonic's guitars would be a lot more expensive if they were built from solid maple. I have a few solid wooden reso guitars at home, of which even the soundwell is solid. Do these instruments crack or fall apart? No. Do they sound bad? No. But maybe they don't sound 'correct' to the reso police? This has already been answered for you! plywood is sonically better sounding in a resonator guitar than solid wood, in the thirties plywood was harder to come by and probably more expensive!

I'm with Michael on this exactly my findings! I suffered arthritic hands and fingers for years and have found what I eat and don't eat to be the key! I cut out dairy, wheat, and sugar! really helped me out no more pain. I work with my hands and hike and mountain climb to keep fit and in my case the more I use my hands the better they seem.
Hope this helps and good luck,,,,,,,

Hi Michael, PM sent Tim[/quote You did the right thing!,let us know the result. The last time I've seen a creaky/moving neck the neck stick had slipped in the neck joint! not something an ordinary repair person has any experience with,,,,,,,,,,, Kenny,

View AttachmentThis Jazz-Blues no serial sighed by Don Young and dated at 89 ,has a metal cone plat-form. I have done a set-up on another Jazz-Blues serial#78 has a metal one as well! I was under the impression all had it except the later El Trovador,,,,,,,,,,, Kenny,,,,, Kenny, if that's a jazz blues in the photo it is nothing like the wooden bodied one also dated 1989 I had. Yours looks like a metal body in that picture or do my eyes deceive me? Yes its a maple veneer, the original finish was a sunburst that lifted,, and I tried an old polychrome finish to it but it flaked terribly. but its an awesome sounding guitar ,in fact it is fitted with a minty vintage cone and sounds like an old National,,,,, Kenny,,,,

On tricones I've always used a continuous ring made from a file folder glued down with a Childs glue stick, very mild glue. And if you want to bed them down quickly tune a half step higher for a couple of weeks and they bed in fast I've found,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Sorry to keep beating the drum, but why all the fascination with pickups? Surely the reason we buy a resonator guitar is for it’s distinctive tone and added volume and dynamic range compared to a wood guitar? The best way to increase the sound at a venue is a mic through the PA. I suspect this is part fashion and part the wish to be seen with a flashy guitar on stage, although I doubt that many who insist on pickups ever get near a stage. Well not sure who your comments are directed at but your preaching to the coir! , I speak as someone who has done the festival circuit in Canada even an international blues festival with a mic but I've had highlander pickups at the ready as well. Yes your right about the flashy thing got my first National in 79 LOL i JUST THOUGHT i WOULD POINT OUT SOMETHING NEW AS MOST NATIONAL PLAYERS i KNOW USE A MIC AND PICKUP COMBO! Kenny,,,,,
