If this was a forum for black musicians (not that it is in anyway exclusive I hasten to add) they'd be asking how to achieve the rattles and buzzes. Irony is the millions of dollars spent trying to emulate 12 dollar guitars mail ordered from a sears catalog...

My home is usually about 15 degrees warmer inside this time of year than winter ( dec 31 - jan 6 in new orleans ) Every season Ill go through the guitars and if nothing else, tune them a little slack.

Hi,
I have a republic which developed what I would describe as a growling rattle... not unlike a very dusty needle on an old vinyl record. Across all strings. Im not really sure what model mine is, rocket 88 or Highway 61 ? Metal full body.
I did a number of little clean up things to get the guitar right... centered the tailpiece, cleaned up the tuner shafts, re shaped the saddle notches and cleaned up the nut... the grinding sound was fixed by attaching my biscuit using some flex gasket sealant stuff. ( permatex 75150)I was afraid it might dampen the cone so I used a tiny bead, 1/16 or so... the thing also had a fair amount of metal filings inside the body.
My Delphi also had biscuit issues... it had a bead of what looked like old dried out wood glue attaching the biscuit. Cleaning that and reattaching it fixed that one.
There is also the use of a felt gasket under the cone on some reso models... Im tempted on the nat. but dont feel a need to fix what seems to be working otherwise.
Ive seen recommendations for both gluing a biscuit and not. Curious as to what others have done in this regard ?
Best,
Jeff
P.s. Its a real pain to have to remove the cover repeatedly... I believe it was deuce that posted the method of loosing strings enough to free them from the tail end and run them through the palm rest when doing the tighten loosen cover off trial and error... lord knows how many strings + the time and aggro that has saved me at least not trying to re-attach strings at the tuner end.

That's really slick and professional Jeff. Thanks for the heads-up. Notice the high action on the guitar at 2-20? e&oe...Yeah man... this was one of the few recordings I found on utube on which you can hear him. Its a nice montage of old footage not synced to the audio but Im working on a 12 bar walking progression and just hunting for chord ideas. something was definitely wrong with the guitar on the actual track... higher than high action and very wonky tuning. Says a lot about bucking up and making do in that he was playing it at all. Im ashamed to say... id probably turn my nose up if someone handed me a guitar with a half inch of relief... Best, jeff

Way back when, I had the fortune to work with count basie and his orchestra a few times... he absolutely required two altec voice of the theater speakers and only three microphones across the front. One for the piano and two in front of the orchestra... he would refuse to play without this familiar sound system... in the hyatt ballroom in front of a few hundred...a sound system was superfluous...
watching what was going on, I realized the orchestra keyed its rhythm off freddie green's right hand. You could never actually hear him in a room with the orchestra but he was driving the band... im still trying to downstroke these riddems...

I seem to recall a wooden finger board, as wood does not expand and contract in its length there may have been unwanted changes in action as the metal changed with temperature. This was never a problem with the new ones I saw, though temperature change in the UK are relatively small compared with the US. Pete A bit off topic... in the 80s I worked on a summer festival tour this time of year trukin' thru the usa south and midwest. The ambient temp at showtime was generally around 31c... with 120k of lighting at 80% the thermometer on the deck would visibly move to around 42c in ten minutes. Thinking back on it, I can see why many famous guitars look like they have been in an oven... at least a wood neck has spent half its life basking in the hot sun before it became a guitar...

This " luthier " quoted me 600$ to reset the neck on my 400$ Reso guitar... at least the pictures in his blog helped me understand how they are put together. The lowest quote for a neck reset I found was 250. This luthier also thinks a national dobro is a guitar... ? Huh ? Having some model building and woodworking experience along with tools... Between unaffordable and unplayable, Id take your approach... intrepid and cautious. ( this forum has been invaluable in helping and my guitar did not need major surgery) www.strangeguitarworks.com/national-resonator-neck-reset/Hth Jeff

No I do not know, only that it is one of first metal wells and one of the last flat backs. As Dr Snake mentioned earlier, a magnet will tell.

HI, are you in the USA by any chance ? I think we don't have that thread size here. We used to have Imperial thread sizes but metric's just about taken over. Hi Davey, Im in the rebuplic of New Orleans, close enough for jazz... I did a search for 4-40 in the UK and came up empty. A hobby hardware mfg has them here in 4 packs with nuts and washers for a couple dollars or so... I dont know if the mail order suppliers here will ship internationally, but the biggest one is Tower Hobbies. They will ship to the UK. Dubro 176 is the part # link ( a dubro for your dobro mr Dopyera ?... Im not sure what the purpose of that screw is other than to center the spider... I cant hear any difference with it completely loose or a quarter turn tight as recommended. A #4 screw and an M3 are virtually the same size with the M3 having a coarser threadpitch... ( i may have that backwards ) being a very low torque connection, on a new non collector guitar, I wouldn't hesitate to tap it to M3 or drill and tap for an incrementally larger size screw. I havent had the spring in my johnson guitar for at least 15 years... all best, jeff

Both of my spider guitars use a 4-40 screw, 1.25 inches long. 4-40 screws are common for R/C model Builders and a good hobby supply will have them in small quantity packs. Very close to a #3 metric but not interchangeble without damaging threads. www.hobbylinc.com/htm/dub/dub176.htm
