So near, yet so far!! The next picture will be the finished instrument, probably a couple of weeks spraying and drying!

TT, the binding that you see in the pic above is about 2mm over size, that will be scraped down when the glue is dry, then the edge will be softened before finish! Yes the binding is routed!

Ebony fingerboard with abalone inlay, I did get some MOP to do some unique design but I couldn't get inspired and I want to get it finished! I will put my initials on the headstock though! Binding rebates cut And binding glued on.

Here's a couple more pics, I'm waiting for some faux tortoise shell binding to arrive for the body and the postman has just dropped off some MOP, so I can start thinking about fingerboard decoration!

Many years ago I worked for a sign firm and we used alot of 5mm thick "Duralumin" sheet (I think that's right)! Of course I had access to lots of off - cuts (and bits that were bigger than off - cuts!!) for making bits for motorbikes etc. I think this would be ideal for your needs. Wouldn't welding create soft spots? I imagine spiders are cast rather than cut from solid for economy?

I'm not sure but I don't think Schoonover uses posts so I won't! (Edit, he doesn't use posts)! I agree Bryan that "tying" the back to the top seems a bit counter productive!

I've done a bit more to it now. I don't think I'll need soundposts as the top is pretty stiff, but will I need them to "drive" the back for tone? Any opinions please!

Well I've been chewing over some ideas for a square neck "Dobro" for a while now! I've decided to keep it pretty traditional in style. I'm using local mulberry wood for the top, back, sides and neck and "Schoonover" style bracing for the top and soundposts if needed! Ebony fingerboard and a sunburst Nitro Cellulose finish. I've got on quite well with it over the last week so here's how it stands at the moment.
