Well I've been chewing over some ideas for a square neck "Dobro" for a while now! I've decided to keep it pretty traditional in style. I'm using local mulberry wood for the top, back, sides and neck and "Schoonover" style bracing for the top and soundposts if needed! Ebony fingerboard and a sunburst Nitro Cellulose finish. I've got on quite well with it over the last week so here's how it stands at the moment.

I'm looking forward to more photos on this project. I've always felt that the Schoonover bracing was a good idea.

I've done a bit more to it now. I don't think I'll need soundposts as the top is pretty stiff, but will I need them to "drive" the back for tone? Any opinions please!

Here is my opinion. I have no evidence to back it up. I've always understood that sound posts existed to support the top ring. To confirm this, many if not all of the posts that I've seen photos of were placed on the back braces. I believe that any sound that is transferred to the back is transferred from the top, through the sides of the guitar, and then to the back. In addition, I believe that the sound rolling around the body cavity tends to activate the back. Finally it would seem to me that regardless of how the back is activated, posts fixed between top and back would tend to reduce the liveliness of the back. That's the way I see it.

I'm not sure but I don't think Schoonover uses posts so I won't! (Edit, he doesn't use posts)! I agree Bryan that "tying" the back to the top seems a bit counter productive!

Here's a couple more pics, I'm waiting for some faux tortoise shell binding to arrive for the body and the postman has just dropped off some MOP, so I can start thinking about fingerboard decoration!

Ebony fingerboard with abalone inlay, I did get some MOP to do some unique design but I couldn't get inspired and I want to get it finished! I will put my initials on the headstock though! Binding rebates cut And binding glued on.

Hi Keith I suppose you rout the edge for the binding? Also, is the binding edge quite sharp? Looking great BTW TT

TT, the binding that you see in the pic above is about 2mm over size, that will be scraped down when the glue is dry, then the edge will be softened before finish! Yes the binding is routed!
