The law in the Netherlands is likely to be much the same as in the UK. When you buy a product from a dealer, your contract is with the dealer and not with the manufacturer. The correct procedure is to take the product back to the dealer that the product was bought from and insist (with the law on your side) that you get the repair or replacement item that you are entitled to. The incorrect procedure is (a) to go direct to the manufacturer, and (b) to ship the item to the manufacturer before an acceptable agreement about the repair and the cost implications have been reached. It is the dealer who should have negotiated with NRP, not the customer. In the UK it is the dealer's problem. l Hi Michael, Thanks for your reply. By the way, I am not offended by your words. I purchased this guitar from Artisan guitars in 2011. Warranty (two years) is long overdue. I contacted Artisan guitars about the spots on my M2 and I will have to copy paste the email communication between them and me because I find it very hard to describe it in my own words: On 30-9 I send Artisan guitars an email about the spots (with pictures) on my M2: They replied: Artisan guitars: The warranty has expired, however I have taken the liberty of relaying these photos to Jason Workman at National. He may be able to shed some light on the issue, and suggest a remedy.I replied to Artisan then and waited for an answer from them: Artisan guitars: I have been in contact with Jason at National, and he has offered to have your M2 repaired in-house under warranty. You would simply be responsible for shipping to and from National. It was my stupid mistake! I overlooked: responsible for shipping to and from National Yes, I am happy they will refinish my guitar, but still I don't think it is fair that I should have to pay for all the shipping costs simply because of some bad varnish and that there supplier has gone out of business. My story gets worse: got an email from Fedex today. When NRP uses Fedex for shipping my guitar back to the Netherlands, I will have to pay €363,- for transport. At arrival I would have to pay an additional €90,- (temporarily export and import). To get my M2 fixed I will have to pay €650,- !! The Fedex ratings for shipping goods (with insurance) to the Netherlands are almost as twice as high then shipping goods to the USA???!! Paid €197,- to send my guitar to NRP. Will have to pay €363,- to get it back. That is a difference of €166,- Anyway, Shanon from NRP will get in contact with me and inform me about the pricings from UPS or USPS. I am thinking of getting in contact with the CEO (Eric these days) of NRP about this and ask him kindly if he can make an exception for me. I would be very happy if we can split the shipping costs. A Dutch saying: de hand over zijn hart strijken

Hi Niek,
I do now understand the situation fully. While I wasn't aware that you bought it from Artisan, I was aware that you had, without realising it, agreed to pay the shipping. It was an understandable and easy mistake which has caused you a lot of stress and anxiety. It is too late now, because the guitar is already shipped. However, for the money you are spending you could have sent it to Mike Lewis in Paris, had a beautiful job done and not had to worry about international shipping, tax and insurance.
I am sure your guitar will be fantastic when you get it back.

I'm not sure if this would apply in your case but I opened an account with Fed Ex and things shipped from me and to me on my account number cost me less, if you are moving forward with fed ex you might ask them if it would cost you less if you had an account.
Secondly I am in favor of getting estimates from USPS for the return. Besides Snakehips, Republic guitars uses them internationally and I've received about 8 guitars locally in the US. undamaged.
Thirdly, I like the idea of asking National to reimburse return expense and if it were me I would submit a request to Jason at National with the estimates you've gathered, including Fed Ex to consider. Even if you are refused, IMHO you have done the best job for yourself to try and make this situation the least costly at this point.

Hi again,
How many other people have NRP guitars with this problem ? I would think a "batch" of faulty product would be enough to create the same problem on a large number of guitars AND affect all of the guitars that this product was used on.
How many others have reported this problem ?

How many others have reported this problem ? NRP has already stated that they used a faulty sealer on a number of guitars. It's possible the owners of the other guitars didn't think to wonder about NRP's part in the problem (they might be blaming themselves), or their guitars haven't started showing symptoms yet. I think it's unlikely NRP is going to release the actual number of guitars afffected.

Just received an email from Jason. My M2 has been disassembled and was being stripped of its original finish yesterday afternoon. It will need to be sanded, prepped, and send over to there finishing dept. When he sends back my M2 he will include a couple packs of strings for my guitar with a National T-shirt. I did send an email to Eric Smith (CEO) and asked him kindly if he could compensate me a bit. Hopefully he will! Dutch saying: Nee heb je, ja kun je krijgen

Just got an email from Jason from NRP. He discussed my situation with Eric (after I have send an email to Eric) that they are going to pay half of the return shipping costs! Great! Very happy that they are willing to compensate me a bit! I will have to contact Jason early next week about my M2. The old finish has been removed and the body was sanded and prepared for the new finish. Hopefully they are going to sen my M2 back next week.

Well, that's helpful. Not perfect. NRP really should have handled this situation more responsibly. They should have sucked it up and paid full shipping from the get-go. Instead of a six-page forum thread about how they messed up your guitar and the after-sales service, they would have had a glowing report. It would have cost them far less.
I know that if I had ever been tempted to buy a guitar from them, I've been cured of that now.

I general though I don't think I know enough to make a good choice when buying a vintage instrument. Does vintage, necessarily, mean better? I doubt it. I'm not a collector and wouldn't want to be afraid to "play" a guitar. Cheers, Peter

Hi all!, First of all I wish you all a very good, musical year with lots of inspiration and in good health! Latest update about my M2! Received my M2 in december just before christmas. National did a great job and the finish is absolutely beautiful! The guitar seems even a bit more dark now. It even plays better (lighter). Here is a picture of my M2 with the new finish:
