Hi, Huge thanks for the speed you got the Michael Messer DVD to me. It's quite superb and will be a tremendous help in developing my playing. I've been playing guitar for many years but recently began playing a resophonic and I believe Michael's approach to teaching and the easy manner he does it will make the learning technique a sheer pleasure. Again many many thanks,
Thanks to the happy customer!
Shine On, Michael

Hi Michael,
The "An Introduction to Slide Blues Guitar" dvd arrived yesterday and took only about a week or so to get to Canada. Not too bad at all. I sat down with it once and am already playing new and different things! Yeah!! I can tell it's going to be a great help and will open up a whole new area for exploration. The old beast I'm playing sounds good and likes being played in open G . Lately,I've been playing an old acoustic Harmony Sovereign in Open E so it's a nice change to the resonator in G.

Hi Rick, Welcome to our forum. It is always a pleasure to say hello to new members. The guitar on the front of my tutorial DVD is a National Student Model 1133. There is a whole thread about 1133s on this forum, here is the link to the page... michaelmesser.proboards7.com/index.cgi?board=tin&action=display&n=1&thread=253&page=1I don't play the 1133 in the tutorial DVD, I play my Fine Resophonic Triolian-type guitar. I love the red 1133, but due to its short scale and solid body, it does not have the prescence of a full-bodied National-type guitar. So, during the 20 years that I have owned it, I have done more photo sessions with it than recording sessions. I have recorded with it, but not for many years. It is just such a great looking guitar! Keep in touch & let us know how you get on with the DVD. Shine On, Michael.

Hi Rick,
They are lovely little guitars and well worth owning. Sometimes I use it as a travel guitar when I am away with my family. The neck comes off easily and the whole thing goes in my suitcase. These days I think they sell somewhere between £500 and £900, and for that money it's a great guitar. It is a pretty loud guitar, but to use on stage or in pubs you would need a Highlander pickup system to amplify it. They have wondeful little 8 inch cones which are quite flat compared to full size National cones. Great little machines!!!!
Shine On Michael.

HI Michael, just loined your forum, I look forward to being involved in this community. I attended your recent workshop in Burnley, I am Mark the pro guitarist and teacher (I think thats how I introduced myself). I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the day and I took home not just a few ideas but a much boosted enthusiasm for playing slide. Many thanks. I have now started working towards including more slide playing in my set, I'll let you know how it works out. I have a few festivals lined up, no not of the Glastonbury type but an arts festival this weekend (won't tell you where in case you think I'm plugging) an acoustic festival/weekend etc I hope to include some slide playing. On average I play two gigs a week using my Lowden and sometimes the resonator.
I would appreciate your opinion on amplification, I play a brass Ozark resonator without a pickup, I own SM57 and SM58 mikes and I usually take my Marshall acoustic 100 amp with me, though I often plug straight into the PA, Do you think I should get a pick up fitted or use the SM57?
Once again I have to say it was great to meet you and play with you, Keep Shining
Mark

Michael, you are right, Michael J Fox bought the Beltona at the Clapton Auction...

Hi Colin, they don't call me Sherlock Messer for nothing. I remember Richard at Christie's saying that it had gone to Michael J Fox. MJF with a Tricone, that conjures up some interesting images doesn't it! Because it went at the auction for such high money, I suspect MJF was supporting the charity & buying a piece of Eric Clapton, rather than buying a Tricone. I could be wrong. I can't believe that was nearly eight years ago. Scary.
Aloha Shine On Michael

Hello Mark, It was a pleasure to meet you and hear you play. I enjoyed my day in Burnley very much, but the pie, peas & gravy flattened me! In my opinion the best way by far to amplify a National is to use a Shure SM57 mic and on the EQ roll off the top and bottom, so instead of the EQ looking like a smile - it should look like a frown - Take off most or all reverb and away you go. If you still need more power than a mic can give (which I doubt), then you should fit one of two pickups to your guitar. The expensive option is a Highlander and is the best pickup ever designed for National-type guitars, and the cheaper option is the Schatten, which is without doubt an excellent pickup and is a lot cheaper than the Highlander. You are very welcome to plug your festival appearance on the forum! Keep in touch, Shine On, Michael.
