That’s good news, I’m sure Dave would have done the right thing. The real pickup killer is having one of the magnets reversed, they are removable, and some people love to tinker! Pete

The person who made the hole in this Eko was obviously an amateur, how did they expect me to get a cone in there? Anyway, a few minutes work with a saw and a few MM bits will soon get it working I got the body a couple of years ago for a fiver, the back and sides are not in too bad a shape , and typical of Eko are a bit on the heavy side , perfect resonator material. It will live again! Pete

I seem to remember a recommendation that the covers on Supro style pickups should be left in the original orientation. The steel top plate gets a magnetic charge over time, and reversing it can weaken the magnetic power of the pickups. It may well be that Dave King also reversed the magnets when he built it , which would stop that effect. Pete

I have made something similar, but found my usual electric guitar technique was not possible because of the pickup cover. I do have a couple of lap steels , and of coarse resonators with covered pickups or hand rests and have no bother with them, maybe I should have tried harder ? Next time a donor guitar turns up I’ll have another go. Pete

One thing you may know, but something I didn’t realise for some years, is the similarity between open G and D . If you know the 1,4,5 system of describing chords /notes , you can call ‘Spanish’ as 5 1 5 1 3 5 ( 1 is the tonic note usually G , 5 would be D and 3 B) Vestapol can be thought as 1 5 1 3 5 1 ( when In D , 1 is D , 5 is A and 3 F#) . So the 1 5 1 3 5 pattern is common to both tunings. I have always stuck to ‘ Spanish ‘ , and this has limited my playing, Try going from one tuning to another, rather than get stuck in one. Pete

YouTube is a great resource BUT there is (amongst the gems) some real rubbish. Most musicians have their own ideas of the best way to play stuff and no 2 will be the same. Find one that suits you and post the details here, some will love it some might criticise ( hopefully creatively) and you can take the advice of more experienced players. Pete
There are no rules, but some ways of playing will get a ‘better’ sound than others. Have fun

Now it’s in one piece and playable I have some improvements I would add to a second Reso-cigar box guitar. There is little space under the cone, and I feel that more space would be desirable. So the cone could be set higher, however this would mean that it would need a raised cover plate or very high hand rest. With 2 identical cigar boxes, I could make a cover plate out of one that would cover the cone hole and the pattern/ stickers on the cover would line up with the box underneath. ( it made sense when I thought about it, though it seems confusing written down). A higher bridge will also allow a 90 degree neck/heal angle that will mean more brake angle ( if I need it) the present tailpiece is understrung. I’m fairly happy with the neck stick being screwed to the back, this means it comes off quickly and neck angle can be easily changed with a small shim. Hope to do a sound clip of some sort later today! Pete

It’s a pity the box had been used before ( there are loads of unnecessary holes ) but despite the small body it has a good sound. The neck has a surface mounted neck stick on the back. I didn’t want any wood inside taking up space ( more space-more bass) Will do a quick video to show the sound ( yes I know you can’t see the sound but it’s the easiest way for my to do it) This also means the box could be replaced at a later date if a nice one turns up (yes I know you can get them on eBay, but I hate the idea of buying something that was designed to be thrown away) Pete

what tuning should i put my dobro in which will make the most sense thanks james So Dobro, does that mean you are playing it ‘lap’ style? If so then standard High G would seem fine to me. If you are playing in the original key of B, there is the quick turnaround chords AEB at the end of each verse. If you find this hard to play fast enough you could capo, or tune up to A, then the chords would be Open E B, so you wouldn’t have to ‘fret’ the A chord. This would also work for a round neck, there is an F# chord that in standard G Spanish would be on the 11th fret, not too easy to play finger style.on a 12 fret to the body guitar. In open A the F# is on the 9th fret which means you could play it with a slide or fingers. If you feel more comfortable in Vesterpol(D) tuning up to E might be good, now you have the E from that quick chord sequence AEB , playable on the open strings. Pete I would not tune my guitar to B even though the song is in that key, especially if you are playing Dobro lap style

You have no break angle on the strings between the bridge and the tailpiece. You cannot do anything about this without doing one of two things - the correct way is to have the neck reset and the bodged way is to run the strings under the tailpiece. The bodged method comes with consequences, eventually it will probably destroy the cone. Shine On Michael A close look at the photo shows a black line under the tailpiece. I spoke to Monton and he confirmed that there was a spacer ( thick hard rubber) under the front of the tailpiece. Hopefully removal will improve break angle, and if lack of pressure on the cone was the problem, cure the rattle. He also plans to put on slightly heavier strings, which could help with the slide/fret rattle on his other thread on the action . Pete

One construction method I haven’t considered is 3D printing. I have a friend with 3D printing company, hopefully when lockdown is over we will talk about such things. Pete
