I noticed that Davey used a cone made for a mandolin that matches one I have ( visually at any rate) These cones have a smaller than guitar size place for the biscuit and no spirals. I think I will use a Continental guitar cone. I used one in a reso mandolin before and was very pleased with the tone. Pete

More router stuff

J Step one is to remove most of the wood with the pillar drill ( my router is not very large) , this is the lower half of the body. Then the body is routed out , one half at a time using the template. The ring of holes will ( hopefully) take the sound from under the cone to the top. Pete The X of wood left is there to support the router , it will add a little strength to the back but not nearly as much as glued in braces, they may removed when I have no more router work to do.

So the template has done its job and I have the 2 lumps of mahogany (just about) the same size. More routing over the weekend. Pete

Looks nice. Ozark often ‘over egg the pudding’ , using lots of unnecessary ornamentation. On some guitars I get the feeling they spend more on the cosmetics than the instrument, not so in this case. Enjoy lap playing. Pete

In a parallel universe, away from mandolins a strange hybrid grows! Pete

g Here is the finished template. The edges need to be square and there are 2 locating dowels on the centre line. The dowels are pushed into holes in the body, 1/2 the body is routed, then the template is flipped and the other side done. This ensures both sides are the same. I will probably be using 2 layers of wood for the body and as they are made from the same template they should glue together with little sanding needed. Pete

Have just posted on the mandolin reso thread an example of how I find the right place for the cone, though I think you have already got there. Pete

Here is the ply for the template. The top line in the centre of the body is the scale length, the second one ( with the circle marked on the centre line) is where the bridge will go, and it gives me the centre of the cone. I measured the compensation on a mandolin with action, scale and strings similar to those I intend to use to get the correct place. Pete

Sounds like you know what to do. The best way on a new build is to copy an existing guitar. Find a guitar with an action similar to the one you want and with the same scale and strings that plays in tune. Then take careful measurement and your done. The bridge should finish 2 or 3mm behind the scale length. Pete

I am a long way behind with my build, will hope to have some templates made next week. Pete

My build was supposed to be a metal body, but have lost contact with the guy who does the ‘rubber press’ work. So the mould for the back ( see above) is now redundant and I will be doing something like Davey. Pete

Don’t forget string gauge, you might be able to fret a IV chord with an 012 top string, but an 015 could be a challenge with the same action. Pete
I usually play an electric with 011s ( in G) with the action at about 1.75mm to 2mm ( I think this is the first time I have measured the action on one of my guitars, though I have when asked on guitars I was selling), this is lighter than I would like for slide, and heavier than I want for finger style. Life is a compromise sometimes.

You may have compromised with the mic ( I also compromised by listening on an iPad) but the sound is lovely. Are you in fact miming to a National you recorded earlier? The tone is spot on . Pete
Even after 50years playing I can’t get my thumb to behave as well as yours!
