Update : So it looks like Lenny has cheated me on the tailpiece. My 12-string tricone has a 6-string tailpiece, so it's 2 strings to 1 hole. I could be wrong but sounds like he got hold of a 6 string somehow and cut a 12 string nut for it - maybe you could restore it if so and sell it on ebay. Not sure if it is a 6 string instrument if you can put 12 strings on it. Good luck.

I believe Lenny has clearly stated that he converts 6 string resonators to 12 by cutting and splicing/elongating the headstock, and fitting with 12 strings. The body not an issue. I would guarantee that the NRP12 string body is the same as the 6 string body, while the neck is wider. I purchased a 12 string neck from NRP and made a 12 string tricone (i posted a pix here a while a go). I bought a 12 string tailpiece, but it was 75 bucks or so, so I guess Lenny was trying to keep his costs down.

mc - the tailpiece in your avatar - is that a home-made job, or how they come from the manufacturer? Just for my knowledge - I might make one myself. TT

It's no secret that the 12-strings are converted 6-strings where the headstock is extended and the correct tailpiece SHOULD be installed. The neck is real solid mahagony, very capable of withstanding the tension. I think the 12-string tailpiece hole spacing is slightly different to 6-strings. You could make one yourself if you had a blank tailpiece to begin with.

Why doesn't this forum send an open request to Lenny to respond on this forum. Otherwise people reading this only ever hear one side of the story.

I've been reliably informed that Lenny knows all about this thread Slide On! Ian.

Well, we've actually heard a few dozen stories -- all telling much the same story, true. The guy has given his response to complaints elsewhere, as reported in the thread.

I have a positive update on Lenny - I got the German silver style N prototype to the O 's -beautiful condition and noted in the Mark Makin book on Nationals . He had to reset the neck on a 1930 polychrome I mentioned in previous threads so that took some time . Then I went to Panama for ten weeks and I got back sept . I just got the cleanest polychrome I have ever seen - set up beautifully just like I requested . He has had a few troubles but stands up in my book - tough when getting bashed on Internet forums . I am happy to eat crow on this one .

Just to confirm the news with you guys, I'm all square with Lenny now, Last week he refunded me the $ for the hardcase he never sent & the $ to buy the correct 12-string national tailpiece to install myself.
A happy ending afterall.... Cheers.

In Jan 2015, I ordered a "old skool 14 fret, w/o palms w/ chickenfeet coverplate from Lenny Gerthoffer the owner Hot Rod Steel guitars.I paid $1015.00. 5months later and I still had not received my guitar. After numerous attempts I finally got a hold of him. He then sent a guitar but it wasn't what I ordered. In the next few months he sent me two other guitars that also were not what I ordered. I have those guitars in my possession but niether one do I care for. I've tried get to Mr. Gerthoffer to send return labels for his guitars but he doesn't seem interested. In Oct. I filed a complaint to the Santa Barbara BBB. Mr. Gerthoffer responded by saying he would refund my money. He e-mailed and said he was "more than happy" to return my money. I haven't heard from him since even again with numerous attempts to reach him. I since have filed a complaint to Attorney General of California and Internet Crime Complaint Center aka IC3. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THIS GUY!! He a very dishonest man. If you are having trouble with Lenny Gerthoffer do the same as I did. Perhaps we can get this guy out of business and in prison where he belongs and that he won't be able to scam anyone else!

Snakehips-Can I sell the two guitars I have in my possession? Yes, but they are not very good guitars in my opinion. I probably could get $400.00 - $500.00 for both. I would rather hold out for my entire refund. I'm hoping the Attorney General and IC3 will come through for me. Since I never received my guitar I ordered I would think I'm entitled to a full refund. If anyone has any advice for me I would be very grateful. It really saddens me that Lenny Gerthoffer has chosen to scam people. It's one lie after another and it appears that his son Grant, if that is really his son, is following in his dads footsteps. Thanks for your concern.
