Hiya, Im learning slide and Im broke, but want to my a cheap resonator.
Done lots of readin, and come to the conclusion the cheap ones dont seem to good. Michaels look brillant, and sounded it wen i saw him live. But i got nowhere near that much to spend
Has any1 heard of Antoria's - would that be worth a gamble at £150?
How much would you pay for a secondhand ozark3515 or a vintageAMG1?
On your budget i think you may struggle - on this link
I am playing a Parlour guitar called an 'Art & Lutherie parlour guitar'- brand new i bought it for £170. I fitted new tuners and brass bridge pinds and used a set of 12s with the 12 replaced with a 13.
Personally i would go that direction until you can get something else. This is where I started playin slide.
If you want to learn slide and haven't got much money, just get a slide and a cheap guitar and have at it. Don't bother with the Antoria, and don't get fixated on having the "right" guitar. Save your money for going to a workshop or lessons. I recall reading about Chet Atkins and someone asking him about what his favourite guitar was, he replied that he didn't have one...he was just in love with "the guitar".
And speaking of parlour guitars for slide, here's one of me practicing what I preach with a Chinese re-issue Stella fitted with a Lawrence soundhole pickup.

Thanks Honeyboy for posting those links.
Hi Trash116,
It won't be easy to find a good resonator guitar on your budget. I tend to agree John & Roj about buying a cheap wooden guitar and learning to play. However, I remember when there was nothing else in the world that wanted more than a resonator guitar and nothing else would do. I am still much the same!
They do turn up second hand for that money, but how good they are is a debatable point.
I reckon the best bet by far in cheap resos is the Johnson Triolian JR-550, a wood bodied 12 fret guitar with the excellent single Continental cone. These crop up on ebay for £120/150.
I take mine out to places where I won't risk an old National!
hI trash 116 I have a ozark wooden tricone that has been uppgraded with new cones ebony tipped saddle and mm newtone strings and it sounds pretty good its not a national but its not bad i'm selling it for 150 pounds i live near wolverhampton if you want to try it wolvoboy
One thing comes across - concerntrate on practicin not the guitar. I have an acoustic (nothing to great) but perhaps I ought to practice more and reward myself when I can actually do it.
But... i guess like you guys... I love guitars and want one ha ha.
Its really great that u all took time to reply - im gonna read through those links too.
I suppose i ought to wait and practice more tho.
But Wolvo - boy - i only live in stourbridge way so I might think about that - wat model is it??
Hi Trash its Ozark woodbodied tricone flamed maple top enlayed ebony fret board model num 3517 mint condition,i upgraded it with new cones and a ebony tipped saddle sounds much better than a standard shop model. emal me at wolvoboy@hotmail.co.uk for my details if you want to try it,or i dont mind bringing it over to you wolvoboy
Hey Trash! For what its worth, as a beginner myself, this is my opinion.
When I first got the urge to try slide, I tuned an old acoustic I had to open G. I loved it, I had loads of fun with that. The first reso I bought was a Fender FR50, £238.00 brand new. Loved it, still do. I had a real reso sound. I went on to buy a cheapy Gremlin £25.00 from a friend of mine, different to the Fender but still good. I then bought a Busker Delta from Robin at Busker Guitars. love that one, play it every day without fail!!!! Then I bought a John Alderson hand built Mississippi single cone, fantastic instrument. Good as it gets.
But you know, I sound like shit on all of them! Give all of them to Michael, or any of the guy's on this forum and they will sound great!!!!!!!
So, from my personal experience, if you're starting out, it really doesn't matter. Just get cracking on the cheapest you can find, you'll love it anyway. When you are up to speed, flog it for a tenner and get yourself a National or a Busker or an MM, or whatever you fancy.
Just my opinion, one beginner to another.
Hope you get sorted. Kind regards and best wishes.
Thanks everyone for all the comments - ive been busy readin all the other threads and other stuff.
And i think the most sensible advice - is practice and forget the guitar - and keep dreamin of a MM until i master it.
I did think Wolvo boy's guitar sounded good - and as not too too expensive worth a think about...
But... one last piece of advice if you dont all mind. - I have now managed to find an Ozark 3515N at £150 - its got a small hairline crack running horizantally cross the headstock between two of the tuners - the bloke said its fine had it checked out by a guitar tech and he said fine. Its factory standard and he will throw in a mandolin free too - he's moving to the states and gettin rid of all his stuff.
Ive also found a vintage AMG1 for £180 factory standard.
Im still abit confused by the wood body / metal thing. The players i love are RJohnson, SonHouse etc From what i seem to be readin would a metal body suit best
What's the view on those two deals or Wolvo boys with all the upgrades that i didnt really understand, but im sure are brillant.
