Read an interesting facebook post recently. Valve amps (circa 30w) sound best with the treble full and bass off, max volume! It's how Muddy Waters / Albert King etc set theirs. There is a 'scientific' reason for it too... TT

Sounds interesting Deuce, but I don't do facebook.
Any chance of a cut and paste jobbie on here, please?

I love my valve amps but change the settings every time I turn them on, there is a fantastic series of podcasts on the fretboard journal the Truth about vintage valve amps by Skip simmons that is good listening.

Perhaps that's why Rory, Tony, Brian, Eric et al used to cream their amps with a Dallas Rangemaster?
I have an original one of those here and I've always been too cautious to make free with it because it's an animal.

Stevie, imagine the exponential tonal control possibilities if you can cut, boost or leave 10 separate bands of guit signal frequencies unaltered. most boost pedals are fixed EQ values, making that factor alone variable opens a large doorway. the second band, with an upper end of 62Hz makes an ideal notch filter for 60Hz (US) mains hum, but will likely help 50Hz also. [speculation] really helps moderate the noise signal from your antenna -er-uh- guitar also. add to that the ability to custom tailor the pedal pre and post gain levels, (signal gain curve slope modifications) before even hitting the input jack into a second round of tone, gain and volume modifiers in the amp. can understand how the entire concept sounds well beyond redumbdant, but in reality it is a very versatile tool. you should hear it hammering scooped mids and max treble into front end of the dark toned VALCO 510-1C circuit i sent to you. unique sound. can't speak for or against the newer model now offered. have only the previous black colored 108, in fact i own 2 of them. as much as i have plugged these pedals in the past, feel compelled to state no affiliation, own no interests in any electronics retailers. www.jimdunlop.com/product/m108-7-10137-01224-0.domitchfit

Having trouble tuning the bass down and the treble up as my AC30 only has 1 tone knob . Any chance of a link to the ‘scientific’ reason , as I also have amps with 2 and even 3 tone knobs . Pete

I'm guessing it's partly pshycho-acoustic Pete?
I have the little white Boss 7 band EQ pedal and it doesn't offer up the same frisson as you experience with the MXR Mitch. On the other hand, I have parametric EQ in my both of my two Yamaha G100-112 amps and apart from qualifying as exponential because of the infinitely variable nature of the control knobs, that is much more effective, but of course being silicone based amps they don't count! ;<D

The 'science' apparently is that when its on full, it stimulates the cones to produce bass frequencies without the need for the bass control. Adding bass just muddies it. According to Jeff Lang... TT

This is my current favorite... 36watts 2/12" eminence . These settings pretty much never change... other than volume. At 7 its LOUD, Im afraid of what it might do At 11 I can get what I need from the guitar.

Nice to see all those tone controls together, most of my amps have the first Fender style one which works fine. The problem (or rather the feature of) multiple tone stacks seem to be the lost of gain, as they remove frequencies. Lots of electric guitarists love gain, and old non master volume amps are often pushed hard to get that ‘killer tone’. I’m not sure about the scientific explanation thing, which might depend on having speakers driven hard, and most of my amps have speakers that are rated much higher than the amp. Pete On a different tone control system, I have wondered about some high wattage resistors and caps between the power stage and speakers. Watkins and then WEM did this on some amps as a fixed high treble control, and I guess it would have no gain loss, unfortunately I I little technical knowledge and would probably blow up any amps I modified!
