The 'Malmsteen Effect' has a lot to answer for - one of my fave tales of yesteryear goes like this....
Back in the mid-80's I worked part-time at Rich Bitch Studios in Selly Oak, Brum. A guy in a very nice suit came in with his cheque book and proceeded to buy a full rack-system (remember those!!), speaker enclosures and a very expensive pointy-headstock Kramer guitar with Floyd-Rose tremolo for his guitarist son's 18th....he was soon light by around three grand!!
.....he bought the whole lot back a week later with son in tow and a pained expression on his face...
"It's not working!!" the hapless father cried - so the gaffer plugged it all in, played a few chords and a couple of solos, then handed the guitar back to the now-quaking young lad.
The young lad played a Malmsteen million-notes-per-second solo, and the gaffer said "okay, strum a C chord 'cos it's working fine from where I'm standing?" The young lad said "sorry, I don't do chords - I don't know any chords at all....but I can do this!" ...and played the same solo exactly - it was the only piece he could play!!
The disgruntled father then traded all the new gear in for a Takamine acoustic and a 'Learn Basic Guitar' video....
Slide On!

Yngwie Malmsteen St David's Hall Cardiff, Wales, UK Wednesday, 25 Apr 1990
I was there. Still got the headache. I appreciate his technical ability, but the noise. It was like listening to an expensive car revving up for 90 minutes. My friend Pete said he was brilliant, and loved it.

I never comment on the forum or anywhere publicly about living musicians because that crosses into territory that I dislike, which is working musicians being critics and reviewers while they are still making records and touring. I think it is a bad place to be because one should not stick out what you don't want chopped off. However, having never knowingly listened to this artist's work until this morning, I just wish there was another title for the genre of this new record, because I would prefer that it doesn't come under the same heading as the music I play and have dedicated my life to for the past 40+ years. Nice car. Shine On Michael. Unfortunately its like corn flakes, no matter what it says on the outside of the box its contrived bs sold to gullible adolescents... Im not really wondering why the host proboards is advertising a mercedes benz to me. If I had to put a label on it... prostitution. That "territory" is doing unto others that we want not done unto ourselves... Im as guilty as anyone...

I find this an interesting question/ topic in that my own motives for playing music aren't entirely pure... danged if that lure of shiny things and admiration doesn't taint everything, I remember well my first real guitar teacher ' Les Weiss ' telling me that learning to play music you dont like is essential to making a living playing music. Ive chosen not to play "standards" in the interest of making money pleasing others and subsequently dont know how to play here comes the bride and cant shred at supersonic speeds. Les changed his last name to wise and moved to Los Angeles 40 years ago... Maybe Im the one who is Less Wise ? ( just to be clear, imo les is Expressing his own frustration. thedeliberatemusician.com/ )
