I hear a British song played through British Marshall amps. I thought the same thing when I saw Led Zeppelin in 197?... Jeff, this is the original "Led Zep." - early 1968! Pagey didn't only rip off the US blues men....

That performance by Jeff and his band, which I have seen before, is absolutely superb.
I haven't read all through this thread, but I am not sure how it fits in with other guitarists being discussed. Jeff is in a class of his own, a brilliant musician. I met him in 2001 and he's a lovely chap to spend time with.
I think we are all aware of where LZ got some of their ideas from, and that Jeff and Janice Joplin played a big part in that. Everything comes from somewhere and all musicians 'borrow' ideas from others, especially from their immediate circle of musical friends.
Shine On Michael.

It all started with "Yngwie Malmsteen blues album" and the lack of feeling of a widdlefest. It then grew like topsy, as these things do, and then, as if by magic, we got onto Jeff Beck as an example of how not to widdle and then it drifted to LZ to which I commented. All my fault, I'll stop now....

Right, you asked for it.....a widdly widdly happening.....
Last Saturday I went to see my sons covers band play in a local boozer. They have a good drummer, good bass player and a supa dupa 18 year old widdly widdly guitarist (Ibanez HM pointy headstock thing; big pedal board straight into the PA, same fizzy sound every song), singers not bad either. So they kick off with The Kinks 'You Really got Me' with a solo at 1G notes/min. OK, thinks I, he's young and there'll be more songs where he won't do that all the time. How wrong I was and things got worse when 'Crossroads' was introduced as a song by Eric Clapton followed by Johnny B. Goode as a song by The Rolling Stones. Jeez - I thought I taught my son better than that - but his answer was along the lines of "the crowd don't know and don't care". He was right, sod'im! I left just before the second set with my left ear deaf and I only managed one pint of London Pride (Bonzo will understand what that means). The packed crowd of all ages were going nuts and loved 'em enough that the pub has booked them back for a gig every month through 2019. Simon Cowell has a lot to answer for... This seems to be the state of live music in local pubs these days - or am I expecting too much? Rant over!
PS - I sound like my Dad, don't I?

Hi PD London Pride hmmmm.. You're lucky to have a local pub that plays live music! The fact they serve a decent beer as well sounds like a dream come true! Must have been ten years ago a bunch of us took ourselves off to the 100 club to see the latest top gun from the states. (Name escapes me). An evening of guitar wizardry and technique as soulless as wet mud. Like MM I tend not badmouth musicians, especially young ones. At least they're out there doing what many of us would like to. The guy knew every lick of the two Jimmies and anyone else you could think of, but didn't seem to get the idea that it should MEAN something. This isn't meant to be a comment on the state of modern blues music (that is how the thread began). Live music every time! Best wishes to you all, John

Fuller's is close to my ticker. "And Lo! it came to pass that The Griffin Brewery was sold to a brewery from afar." With such prime Thameside development potential the future for copper plate Pride and ESB doesn't look too rosy. It's the thin edge of a wedge in my view- a slippery slope if you will?
Widdly diddly guit-fiddlers? Anyone on here seen "B Sharp" (sic). The guitar player Jerry built his own guitar looking like a slightly smaller take on a Firebird. He can do all that widdly stuff with ease but if and when he does, he still always makes it melodic. Best of all, you can usually see them in South East pubs for gratis and fill up the jug for them.
e&oe...

I dunno. I blame the oldies, they're the ones booking it. I'm getting fairly brassed off with repeatedly hearing "we don't do original music, only tributes and cover bands". I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever get famous... TT

TT, you are already famous and if they don't get what you're about, you don't want to be playing at their venues.
If all they want is Knees up Mother Blues, then they're not worth bothering with. I have fought against that for 40 years and I am still fighting against it. Nothing has changed in all those years. There were always a few broad minded people in the middle of it.
Shine On Michael.

Not for me. They whole playing as fast as possible seems more like a sport than music to me. A lot of punters love it mind you. I certainly wouldn’t side that along with to your music Michael. Mibbie reflects the sign of the times with mr trump being in charge

I've not actually heard it, and probably won't. TT Well TT, if theres a silver lining. I did some searching for any Jeff Beck acoustic stuff and found this vid. A classic for me... its from the early 70s ... a bit of a shame in that his plexi sound isnt a bit more forward in the mix. Its a cook performance! * The band doesnt come in for a bit over 2:00 Thx
