Would I release an album with that title and put a Dobro on the front?
I believe it is not illegitimate, but I had no knowledge of its release until a journalist approached me for an interview a week or so ago.

Rhythm Oil is definitely no longer available. The only way to get a copy is to search for a second hand one, or make a copy from someone who has one. I only have one copy, so if anyone does spot some for sale, I'll have one!

Thank you Slide496. It is often the case that the artists don't have more than one or two copies of their own work. Especially as the years go by they get given away. Rhythm Oil was originally released in 1993 on the Minidoka label and was re-released in 1999 by Koch UK, but sadly due to mis-management both releases disappeared from the shelves very quickly. Here are the Johnny Cash sleeve notes that he wrote for the Rhythm Oil CD.....first handwritten by JC and then a printed version... Original front cover.... Nice photo too....from the Sunday Express - July 1993 Shine On Michael

mm Thanks for posting the info - if I run into any at reasonable cost in the U.S- which I doubt -will grab it, so easy to make forgeries these days.Would be great if it was reissued as mp3s.Tribotone in Texas carries the instructional DVDs and the Newtone Strings. I was introduced to your work recently through a slide player who mentioned you on another forum.

Thanks Slide496, much appreciated.
It would be great to see Rhythm Oil re-released, maybe someday Terry Clarke and I will do something to make it happen. Sadly Jesse Taylor is no longer with us, so it would be down to Terry & me. It was a great project, and with Johnny Cash writing the sleeve notes it has all the right credentials. It won an award in Austin, I think it was 'Import Album of the Year'.

That 'dobro' photo does the rounds a bit! Its that gretsch I posted about a few weeks ago thats on the cover / april of my 'great guitars' calendar, labelled as a 'national tricone'! I suspect the album 'designer' put 2+2 together and came up with something other than 4. Is that you all greased up MM, or a stuntman? TT

That is probably right TT.
The Rhythm Oil CD package and photos were done by by brother, Alan, sometime in early 1993. The guitarist is not me, it is Pete Cummings, guitarist & film editor, from Nashville. The guitar (Pete's prized Fender Strat) was taken to a supermarket where it was shrink wrapped. Then, both the guitar and Pete were smothered in a few gallons of black molasses for the photo shoot. Then......the Strat was placed in a bath where is was hosed down to remove all the molasses!!!! And then it was unwrapped.......and very luckily for Alan and me, it was okay!!! The things we are prepared to ruin in the name of art!
