Hi, I have a Republic tricone, and a single cone, tuned to open G and D. I wish to develop a reasonably large repertoire of instrumentals in these tunings on these instruments, so can you please recommend a few, and their sources (which player, cover, etc.)? I am also 'open' to open Gm and Dm (pun intended), since it would only involve tuning one string a half step down. Thanks!

Not much in the blues canon is purely instrumental, it's a vocal music after all, but you do have a mass of Hawaiian music available, plus a lot of folk play "celtic" tunes in open tunings. It's just a matter of looking.

You could also include Vestapol (open D) and Spanish Fandango (open G). Steve Phillips does a great tune in open D called 125 Express, which I'm told is his version of an old Frank Hutchinson tune. It's on his album Steel Rail Blues.

I'll happily send you the tab to Curly Weaver Rag or Dark is the Night if you would like.

There's an unusual slide instrumental by the Rev. Gary Davis, "Whistlin' Blues", also covered by Stefan Grossman. It involves dropping the top string to B (DADF#AB) but is not difficult to master once you've got used to the unusual tonality of this open D6 tuning!

Poor Boy, amongst many other John Fahey tunes - earlier 60s stuff is the best, IMO..

Hi,
Check out Mike Dowling's album Bottomlands, e.g. Swamp Dog Blues, Open D. Most of the album is instrumental but have only just start out on this myself. Its quite easy to learn, but quite difficult to play well, like he does!
Cheers
Mel

'Thibodeaux' by Sam Mitchell, from 'Two Far From Home', is in open D.
