Anyone who thinks Stefan Grossman is 'not a good guitarist' needs serious treatment! I've sat five feet from the guy when he's done a show (at least twice) and done one of his workshops and if that's being ' not a good guitarist' - well, I wish I was as bad as Grossman! On the subject of the thread, check out the Mel Bay publication The Complete Country Blues Guitar Book, which Stefan edited: it's a mine of great tunes in standard and altered tunings. Many of them appear on Stefan's CDs Yazoo Basin Boogie and Black Melodies on a Clear Afternoon. Blues, ragtime, Celtic, own compositions, jazzy stuff: the man does it all!
BTW: er, who's Tim Nicolai??!!
Cheerily,
Gerry C

I am currently picking up 'The Assassination of John Fahey' by Grossman. Simple tune, but quite wonderful. I am thinking of adding some slide fills to it as well. It's in open D.

Agreed he hasn't got the greatest voice - but he's the first to admit it! Now if he could sing the way he plays... ;D
Cheerily,

BTW, fibrebundle, the original arrangement of The Assassination of John Fahey (aka Tribute to Lonnie Johnson) is in Drop D, not open D. I have the tab: PM me an e-mail addy for a scan'n'send if you wish.

Who Is Tim Nicolai? Well, quite a lot of people would like to know at the moment! But more of that later ... He played on at least 3 of Stefan Grossman's compilation albums - a young Tim is in the bottom photo www.lassejohansson.se/novelty_guitars.htmwww.lassejohansson.se/masters.htmwww.lassejohansson.se/advanced.htmIronic really after his comment about Stefan, but that was just his opinion, and he never tried to say he was better than Stefan.Tim was and still is a good guitarist who played ragtime very well when it was popular. The last link shows Tim playing a Moondog guitar - this is where it gets a little more controversial. He ran his own company, Moondog Guitars, until recently. He was a power seller on eBay. You may well have seen his guitars on eBay. The guitars were hand-built in China, and had generally very good reviews and were very reasonably priced. Unfortunately, for whatever reason (I've no idea what), he's ceased trading, and some people who've paid for their guitars haven't got them. Most of the people who've reviewed the guitars on Harmony Central were very complimentary.

Tim makes a mighty attempt at flogging some music out of his Moondog "Howlin'," but have you ever heard such a dead resophonic guitar? A similar unbranded model has been for sale on ebay in the US for a little over $100 delivered for some time now. I learned about resonators by buying several of these and making upgrades and modifications to them. They sound atrocious from the factory, but spring to life after a few things are done.
