Hi Bod,
Those minor chords are all with the steel straight across the strings and are as you say, two note implied chords. With an angled steel there are more two note chord possibilities, and with an angled steel and very good control, there are three note chords too.
The only instructional DVD available at this time that I would recommend (until I do one!) is the Bob Brozman Hawaiian guitar one. Musically it is totally Hawaiian (which may or may not be your taste). Technically the lesson lays out an amazing amount of information that as far as I know, nobody else has done in that way. Bob Brozman's music is to many 'an acquired taste', but his teaching abilities and his 'fact cramming' abilities are very good.
If it Dobro you are learning, in addition to the BB one, Josh Graves has a great DVD. Cindy Cashdollar's one is good too. In fact it is well worth getting.
I learnt to play by listening to records, watching players and grabbing any scrap of information that I could. Along the way I have met and played with musicians who have inspired me to learn more. I have watched tutorial DVDs and learnt from them, but this was long after I had learnt to play. So my experience is different to someone learning now. I guess if I was learning now I would do both, I would listen & learn, but also learn from the DVDs that are now available.
Shine On Michael.

Hi, this discussion about lap-style playing has been very interesting. I have noticed that I have been a little bit worried about trying something new, but this could be fun . Maybe I try to make Beard's squareneck Dobro kit next winter or just buy a reasonable "Korean" one. By the way - I just visited local music store and they had a round neck dobro (sammick?). it wasn't loud at all and it sounded more like ordinary acoustic guitar with a little bit of metal in tone. I don't want to buy that one. So... is there any good choices? Regards Pertti

Hi Pertti
The Paul Beard Goldtone's are great for the money. Arguably the best far east squareneck. Wechter are also ones to look out for. Similar price and i've heard they are on a par or maybe better the Beard.
Cheers Ben
