A new post by fonsolo brought me back to this thread and I just read your comment about playing rhythm with a fast vibrato, and I don't understand what you are saying? Vibrato is used to make a note sing out. It is not there to make a note wobble and be unsure of its actual pitch. It is not a tremolo effect, which does have to be in time with the music. True vibrato has to be a subconscious thing that is happening in another place to your conscious mind, otherwise it sounds wrong and fake. If your mind is telling your hands to play a note and then shake your hand around, then you are doing it all wrong. This is something I hear in many inexperienced players, and in some experienced players too. I an not trying to be critical or clever, I am trying to be helpful to you and others. Shine On Michael I think it make sense to me, to not overthink it, to abandon the idea of boosting up vibratos. I was practicing John Henry (John Jackson's arrangement) and Frank Hutchison's K.C. Blues, both in Open D, very similar themes and I'm getting better. Neither John Jackson or Frank Hutchinson are using much, if any vibrato in their playing on those pieces. Frank used a little vibrato when he was playing lap style, but I don't recall seeing John ever really using it. Maybe occasionally to bring out a particular note, but rarely. Shine On Michael

Here are some nice vibratos or I don't know the correct terminology.

You are correct, those are nice vibratos on the 12th fret. That is what I said, that John only used vibrato occasionally to bring out a particular note. That note is not wobbling, it is a true clear D note and John's vibrato is making it sing.
I knew John and we had many discussions about slide playing. In fact John was interested in my vibrato and touch and we talked about that quite a lot. John did not consider himself to be a slide player as such, he just liked to play a few songs in open D tuning with his brass knife slide.
John was a wonderful person. He was a kind, polite and humble gentleman.

Open D, open D minor and open G.
This is my rendition ( in open D minor ) of an old spiritual which I heard for the first time from Odetta, and which I also recommend listening to a wonderful, recent version by Archie Shepp

I saw/heard Tom Rush play Panama Ltd back in the olden days and still love it.
Blues, Songs and Ballads is a great album but Panama-free.
Cheers

Hard Time Killing Floor Blues on the reso in double drop D
Goodnight Irene on the Weissenborn in open D
He makes it sound so easy!

Here's Archie Shepp version, not resonator but musically inspiring I know it's not resonator but I just have to say thanks for posting the Archie Shepp. I've been listening to him since the early 70s and as alway, Mr. Shepp is deeply musical and inspires my soul. ... Now back to the topic: resonator guitar!

I am revisiting some of the first songs I started to play on slide guitar. Peg-leg Howell’s Georgia Skin Game and Robert Johnson’s Come on in My Kitchen.
Come on in My Kitchen is a very simple song , no chords to worry about ( ok, it’s an extended 8 bar, with the usual changes but they are just implied when Johnson plays them). And most of the work is on the top couple of frets. But it’s all about the details. My friends band now does a version which sticks in a full 5 chord, sacrilege!
