I watched Mississippi Fred McDowell documentary and it made me pick up my guitar and play You Gotta Move. You Gotta Move, Things 'Bout Comin' My Way, Sittin' On The Top Of The World and Come On in My Kitchen - all 4 songs share similar melody. I guess Sittin' On The Top Of The World was the first one?

Been binge listening and playing Little Feat this week after going through my old vinyl. These two are the playing favourites right now. Doing both in Open D and trying to get at least a few of the mandolin licks in on slide.

King Solomon Hill, sliding is the simple bit - getting somewhere near his bass runs is another story plus the varying bar count. (Open D)

I have difficulties with keeping a steady rhythm while playing fast slide vibrato. Any vibrato faster than rhythm is messing up my thumb movement.

Hi all
Just to contribute something to this thread: I’m currently playing a medley of ‘Roll Um Easy’ by Little Feat with Ry Cooder’s ‘Boomer’s Story’. I’m using my old Dobro and a stainless steel slide in open ‘D’ tuning. I’m getting there!
Cheers
Andy

Sam Mitchell's acoustic version of 'Monkey In The Head' is the challenge at the moment.
...on a MMFE in D - mixture of Kokomo Arnold, Bukka White and others with Sam's amazing playing.
Not easy, but a great song.

I'm playing Mance Lipscomb's version of 'Jack of Diamonds' again this week.
It's a pleasure going back to something you know, it's like there's always more to hear, further to go.

Hi all,
Lately I've gone back to the beginning, to the song the sparked in me the passion for the haunting tones of slide guitar: "Paris, Texas" by Ry Cooder. Probably all of you played it at one time or another. Just a few days ago, I recorded a video for YouTube a few days back. I looped a little sample of the original song to use a musical bed, so to speak. Please, let me know what you think.

Nice tone and timing, Fonsolo. Also a reminder that I always try and play too fast. On a trivial note, your Lightning looks great on screen!

A new post by fonsolo brought me back to this thread and I just read your comment about playing rhythm with a fast vibrato, and I don't understand what you are saying? Vibrato is used to make a note sing out. It is not there to make a note wobble and be unsure of its actual pitch. It is not a tremolo effect, which does have to be in time with the music. True vibrato has to be a subconscious thing that is happening in another place to your conscious mind, otherwise it sounds wrong and fake. If your mind is telling your hands to play a note and then shake your hand around, then you are doing it all wrong. This is something I hear in many inexperienced players, and in some experienced players too. I an not trying to be critical or clever, I am trying to be helpful to you and others. Shine On Michael

There was a time back in 1984/85 when there wasn't a slide guitarist on the planet that didn't include a version of 'Paris, Texas' in their setlist. I never did because that was Ry's thing and I only wanted to play and sing Blind Willie Johnson's 'Dark Was The Night....' which I occasionally do in my shows. You are playing it well and the guitar sounds great in your hands. I heard you playing a Mark Knopfler tune on it as well, which I thought was very well played. As an old timer with 45+ years of slide playing under my belt, if I may make one suggestion; I think you should try one of Diamond Bottleneck's hand blown glass slides. I believe you will have more accurate control, get a better tone, more clarity and less string noise from one of these slides. Shine On Michael

The slide I’m using here is the Diamond Bottleneck you kindly included with the Lightning, which is still my favorite, but I will heed your advice and try to get my hands in on of the hand blown ones. Thanks again!

Shine On Michael I think it make sense to me, to not overthink it, to abandon the idea of boosting up vibratos. I was practicing John Henry (John Jackson's arrangement) and Frank Hutchison's K.C. Blues, both in Open D, very similar themes and I'm getting better.
