Hi again ! Well the seller never responded to my request on Friday. It all sounds dodgy and I have no reason to think a local will get any further than you did, but as all he has to do is walk in and start chatting, it's worth a try. Shine On Michael

Progress ..... ! Got a reply. I'm asking if the seller can remove the coverplate to take a photo of the cones in situ. He said he is happy for me to come & collect the guitar if I win the auction.

Richard, I think that asking the seller to open it is not a good idea at all. Whether or not it has good or bad condition, or old or new cones, is at this point in time, irrelevant. And if the seller doesn't know what to do, which he/she doesn't, they could'd wreck an undisturbed original set of cones.
I have even stopped UK customs officers from opening one of my National guitars once. They believed I might be carrying drugs in the guitar and said they were going to open it, so I insisted that I should open it and remove the cone with them watching me. It was a surreal experience, but I got my way and they didn't find anything other than legal dust bunnies inside.
Shine On Michael.

Yes, fair enough. The question was as much as to see if he was willing to do so. I expect he will be too frightened to do so. Also, the remaining coverplate screws look broken or possibly corroded & stuck (I once had a stuck coverplate screw that took a few days to budge). Now, I wonder where I might get some replacement screws from ? !!!!
Yes, totally ! I'd insist on opening up a guitar myself, too !

Currently sitting at £1800 with no bids, I wonder if they have missed there market as can do when you mess people around (Lenny???) we will see a day or so to go, my prediction of £2000 still holds water as I again look at that headstock crack and it could involve fingerboard off and heat, let alone what is under the hood/coverplate so do not overbid, take my advice.

Hi again,
I've not heard any more from the seller. He did say I could collect the guitar if I win it - BUT I'd rather wait for the auction to end. Would be interesting if he lets me come & see the guitar, after the auction, IF no one bids on it.

S'gone £1950. I offered them quite a bit more than that in the week. I didn't want to get involved in another auction debacle. Hey ho.
Best wishes to you all, John
