Maybe something of interest. The seller has been in touch offering me a 'second chance' to buy this guitar. Maybe whoever bought it backed out or didn't like the look of it and returned it. The moment has kinda gone, but I wondered if anyone knew anything about the guitar or were you a bidder? Wot do you think? Should I stay or should I go? ๐ถ๐ต Best wishes to you all, John

HI John,
make extra sure that it is the seller who is offering you a second chance & not some clever fraudster. Ask for extra photos or some such confirmation. I imagine it's as you say, non payer or a return.
If the seller is Cash Converters it should be easy to check. I personally think it's worth about 2K but that's just my opinion. What should it be worth when it's all sorted out ?

The moment has kinda gone, but I wondered if anyone knew anything about the guitar or were you a bidder? Wot do you think? Should I stay or should I go? ๐ถ๐ต Best wishes to you all, John Hi John, It is nothing special and that is reflected in its price. However, it is a 1928 Style 2 National Tricone. It needs professionally repairing and a serious clean up and polish. National Tricones are not meant to look like they have been road worn, they should gleam in the sun. Before parting with any money, you would need to see more photos of it. For some reason it was understrung in the photos I saw and that might just be that the cones have collapsed, it might be a naive current owner, or that the guitar is beginning to become unsettled and warp from years of string tension. Back when I was collecting I wouldn't have looked twice at it because of its condition, but these days all this stuff is becoming rarer and much older than it was 30 years ago. This guitar is 95 years old and it has not been well looked after, it looks like it has been in storage for a few decades and that is the reason for its condition, and probably the reason its serial number is not listed in Mark's book. I hope that is helpful. Shine On Michael

Thanks Michael and davey. Have been in touch with the seller and wheels are turning. Made them an offer they might very well refuse! ๐

What additional photos might be helpful?

I ask for additional photos just to make sure that they've actually got it, but if it's a Company you're pretty safe.
I love buying sleepy items like this but the price has to be right as costs can escalate. No idea of the eventual value but the market is pretty small in my opinion.

Make sure they know how to parcel up the guitar for shipping !! If need be, send them instructions ! Don't assume they know how to package a National (specifically) for shipping to you.
My bandmate, Prof Scratchy, once bought a lovely 1932 National Polychrome Triolian from a US pawn shop, online - which came with an original cardboard type vintage case - sized more for a larger guitar. The pawn shop stuff the shipping label on the cardboard case - and sent it like that, without a shipping box. The guitar arrived with the coverplate and minty, original cone squashed inwards. Fortunately, I was able to pop the coverplate into shape but the original cone was gubbed. Or maybe you can go & collect it ? You live in Scotland now, don't you ??

Hi again ! I once bought an item on ebay from Cash Converters - and got a great deal. I got a Hohner harmonica Bullet mic, minty, for circa ยฃ40 (which included a 3D-printed mic-stand mount chuck in, to go with it, made by some UK ebay guy that makes them for about ยฃ22.50) So, I check their ebay page every so often. I missed the Tricone though ! In case anyone is interested, that bullet mic holder, for mic stands is here : www.battleplanharmonica.com/ammo-clips

I spoke with the guy at the store with an offer, said they would get back to me but they didn't. I've lost interest now.
