Jono, I'm an old cynical white man who was introduced to the wonderful music of Robert Johnson in the early/mid sixties and I've always taken the 'Crossroads' story with a truck load of salt as it seemed to be great marketing hype.
The reality of RJs 'sudden' appearance of talent was, in my opinion in those days, down to having a teacher (mentor in 2019 speak) who showed him a lot of tricks and gave him encouragement and guidance.
As I've said before on this forum, one of his running mates (who shows up in the film btw) told me that most of the time in the 1960/70s those old blues men used to tell the white researchers who interviewd them what they (the researchers) wanted to hear.
However, it seems that one of those white researchers has really done some homework over the decades and is now ready to publish.
That's the good bit of the film......now watch it and make your own mind up.
No comment re the direction, music and other stuff which makes up the film..

Watched it right through....The Robert Johnson film, that is. Hmmmmmm! Recording the John Lee Hooker programme to watch later as the Liverpool match is on Radio 5 Live at the same time. Same same! Result |

I have on good authority that Robert Johnson is Elvis' grandfather... yes I was incredulous when I first heard it but apparently RJ hooked up ( jumped de fence ) with a white woman at a juke near Tuepelo Mississipi in '19. Back then many children were born with a bit of cream in their coffee and many times you could barely tell... it was called 'passing' for a black person ( legally 1/32 blood ) to declare themselves white. ( the first black mayor of NOLA was a black man who served in the US army as a white man ) Any documentary that does not mention the fact that bob is elvis' grandad has to be imaginary ! its fairly obvious when you consider that lisa marie married michael jackson +++ look at the pictures   Of course Im kidding, just like most of teevee. 😳 |
