Hey guys, just wanted to share this thing, I needed to add a pickup(pup) to this little parlor sized reso, a piezo just wasn't right for the job. So I figured I'd hide a pickup under the coverplate again. (Like on the mando) Here's a very improvised demo, just to show how it sounds, I like the result a lot! 😅
Open C tuning. Strings: Nickel 17-58.
Just jammin' away..
And another installed mag.pickup here, on a reso-mandolin!

Great stuff John! However, I would like to know more about the pickup, where it is mounted etc. etc. Alas I do not and will not use facebook. Any chance of you posting some detailed pictures on here, please?

Thank you! Well, others have asked the same thing and I got this job done so quickly I totally missed out on taking some photos! But I took another identical pickup and a coverplate and took some pics just to show how I did it.. Over at FaceBook I did explain it earlier but here goes again. So, here's how it's done!! Buy these cheapest of cheap pickups on eBay (yes, they're awesome for slidetone) and pick the internal stuff out.. Then use it on your favorite reso (brass, steel won't work) or any other guitar. So many ways to get this done, this is one way to go!! These pu's are very thin and I see a number of applications for them on guitars and any stringed instrument.. :-D Money, expensive pickups, isn't the issue here, good tone comes (usually) from many other things as well.. These sound quite nice to my ears! Try it and have a blast, folks!

So John, just to be clear, will they work using a steel coverplate or do I need to try this on a total non-steel guitar?

These magnetic pickups will not work under a steel coverplate, only brass or wood!

Aha - so this one will be my first experiment then......
Pickup to be fitted under the wooden "resonator".

Just curious if the poles on the pickup naturally lined up with the holes on the res cover and is that necessary they do so or just one configuration?

That is and sounds awesome John<,,,,,,, I always go for a mag pickup in my resos' ,in conjunction with a mic its the way to go for me,,, I think you should market something like this I bet it would be quite popular !

I love this idea and usually associate that kind of left brain thinking with PeteT. It leaves me wondering why I missed something so obvious. I never went for the Hotplate idea but that was largely related to the cost for me. Also, using magnetic pickups doesn't seem to garner a good reso tone unless combined with a mic, but listening to the clip it seems to get somewhere in the ball park (at least it does on my mobile 'phone). Excellent.

Harriet Harriet, this time the holes matched the poles.. I just had to enlarge them a bit. The pickup is a bass p-u so there's 4 pole pieces, a perfect fit for a mandolin!!

Kenny,,,,, Thanks Kenny!! Yes, the magnetic pup and a mic in front of the guitar is really good way to go! Or just plug the pickup in and play like that, these cheaper pup's are quite microphonic and capture some cone-tone too.. When I get a line of my own resonators going I surely will get some of my ideas into the production, for sure! I like to try stuff others won't, haha! If it works, it works..

Excellent. e&oe...Hey Stevie, thanks! Well, I like to get some "out-of-the-box" ideas going now and then, it usually works out well. A magnetic pickup surely gets the warmest tone, at least for me, piezos are awful mostly. Since I started out as Bottleneck John in 2005 I've played an insane amount of gigs and I've grown sick and tired of playing un-plugged and have to rely on sound-engineers messsing things up. I took pride in playing acoustic for real, no cables, just a mic. But over the last year I've gone plugged in for like 90% of the gigs.. It so, so much easier to get a good tone on stage and through the PA. So, I look for new ways to get the tone out, acoustic'ish or not, it's cool with some distortion too, haha!! And these cheaper, (for many of us, useless) pickups are really nice to work with, slightly microphonic they get some acoustic tone in there too..
