Just listened to Wolf's version, for sure he is singing the 4 and 5 chord and his strong vocal makes these chords resonate, even though the guitar and piano just suggest them, which is what makes the recording great, down to the open free feel....

I think you are missing the point because we are discussing the first two bars of the verse, which in verse one the bass goes to the 4 and throws everything for a moment. There is no question about the 4 and 5, they are definitely being played by the bass, piano, second guitar and vocal.
It quite understandable, because it is confusing and quite difficult to discuss something like this without being face to face.

Maybe Wolfs just playing round the 12 and 10 fret and the rest of the guys are just running along beside him getting ahead and behind a little here and there

Just listened again on my as I just realised dodgy headphones and they cut out the bass and piano. But they made guitar two stand out, guitar two seems utterly lost for up to two verses, not to mention out of tune for 1 verse at least. Put in my other phones and the pianos back seems to be doing what piano players do, Dixon cant be wrong what ever he dose. I wonder how they would sound on 'take 3' Like you said the best playing isn't always the best take, (edit)just re read comments looks like I'm going over old ground.
