Hey Fred. I'm holding the Continental cone out of my Republic Hwy 61 in my and right now. It only has the spirals on it. Tere are none of the little ~1' lines along the outer perimeter. Hope that helps!

You are right Pete, It is an 18. I love them! I tried the Yellow Pack too but that 22 unwound 3rd felt dead!

I switched to an unwound 3rd recently and love the tone. To me, it gives that vintage twang that I ave been looking for. But, I use light strings (which also contributes to the vintage tone IMO), Slinkys in the purple pack which come wit an unwound 3rd. Its a 17g, any heavier feels dead to me on an unwound 3rd. The Purple Slinkys are 11-47 and go against conventional reso wisdom, but I've put them on all my Nationals, NRPs, Dobros and Republics!

I picked up a National Chicagoan awhile back to mess around with. It's really a lot of fun to play. I can get MUCH better tone out of it holding it Spanish style and playing with a slide. Looks weird I know, but works for me. Does anyone actually play these things like that? Is there any major disadvantage?

There is a very reputable vintage dealer here in the US called Elderly Instruments. They continuously list "National" in their used stock sheet. I click on it and it is almost always a NRP. Very annoying and I've lost a lot of respect for them as they should definitely know the difference.

Hey Snakhips, awhile back I found a 14 fret Duolian that had a very light set of strings on it and it sounded AMAZING! After some research, I found that they were Slinky Purple pack, 11-48's (they come with an unwound 3rd string). I've since put them on all my resonators. I love the tone and increased volume. It's totally against the common wisdom of reso players and you couldn't have convinced me to try them before I got that 14 fretter, but now I'm hooked! This is the '35 Duolian, shortly after I found it....

As a professional photographer since 1980, photoshop power-user and someone who has always worked on the sets of big budget films and commercials, I've seen what can be done by make-up artists, prop builders and retouchers and I remain somewhat skeptical. But for me, the bigger question has always been this (I know this is going to seem like sacrilege)... Why the huge deal about RJ anyways? He's awesome, and I love his music and his influence, don't get me wrong. But the whole crossroads and the deal with the Devil legend was attributed to at least 2 other blues players before him, including another Johnson... Tommy (who was portrayed by Chris Thomas King in "Oh Brother Where Art Thou"). And before that, there are numerous other legends about the same deal with other types of artists and performers. Plus, there were lots of other great players and performers before Robert who never got any recognition. Just seems like RJ had the better publicist! Just kidding (kind of), I know he didn't really have a "publicist", at least while he was alive. Again, I'm not diminishing his talent or influence at all... I love his work. I've just never quite understood the all the hype. OK.... flame on!~😏

I made a New Year's resolution to record and post videos as a way to get comfortable playing in front of others. I bought a Zoom 2Qn and a Zoom IQ7 for my I-Phone 11. I gotta say, the I-phone with the mic is pretty awesome. Plus, it's way more convenient and for me, that means I'm going to use it more. I'm kinda in the photo/video business, so I'm pretty picky about quality. I've been very impressed by the I Phone 11. I even turn it around so I can see the screen as I'm shooting so I can frame everything up properly. I know this negates the use of the really great lenses that are on the other side, but the quality is still outstanding. Plus, If you are going to edit at all (I usually just pull a little 2 minute clip and fade in and out on the head and tail end using I-Movie) you just Air Drop the clip to your Mac and you are off and running!
I'm looking into that Dolby On app that was suggested above. Looks promising!

I always enjoy seeing your brother's work Michael! Seems he got to be a witness to so much great musical history. I recently got to hang out with another great "witness", talk music, photography and look at photos. Kirk West... bet Alan knows him! Does Alan have a book out?

I have a vintage Style 0 set up that way. Its a bit of a Frankenguit so I don't worry about it to much. On modern guitars, I don't have any qualms about drilling a hole for a jack tho...
