excellent playing in second video. looking at aftermarket pick up at bridge, sounds too good to be piezo. small microphone? makes me wonder if mic on stand was used for this recording, or in tandem with unknown bridge unit. mitchfit Re, unknown bridge unit - could it be a Schertler of some kind? (Dyn G… ??) They’re “moving coil” transducers… Re. mics - Derek Gripper responds to this discussion with some info on his amplification choices circa 2010… link

Lovely stuff! Wonderful playing and a fascinating interview - I really enjoyed the bit about having more or less started from the view that guitars are not very successful instruments that need reinventing only to discover that good traditional ones work brilliantly…
Here’s a couple of video lessons in which he offers guidance on getting underway towards Jarabi on guitar, one clear step at a time from novice to beginning to improvise - I think they’re great!

‘Cheap’ seems to me an unfortunate choice of word, if one does not intend to suggest an element of inferiority, as that is one of its meanings. If one simply means inexpensive or relatively inexpensive that seems a happier term.
‘Copy’ - well, yes, but aren’t all guitars of this type made today copies?
Less expensive than an original? This might not be so straightforward: Are we talking, so to speak, in ‘real terms’ (new price then adjusted and compared to new price now) or in today’s market (vintage vs modern)?
In ‘real terms’ some of today’s copies are, I believe, very expensive compared to the originals. Likewise, some of today’s copies cost several times the price of others. Some may be worth the difference, others may not.
Country of manufacture may condition cost, not sure that it necessarily impacts quality.

Seems everyone’s confused, including the bbc - they have two different listings for series 8 episode 4, including this one that features the steel bodied guitar and today’s date, but says ‘not currently available 🤷🏼♂️ link

Don’t think I’d come across Lon Eldridge before this thread so I’ve been checking out a few of his videos, hugely enjoyable. This one is a little different to most of the ones I’ve come across him doing so far, but I think he makes a lovely job of it …

According to some posts on Facebook and Twitter (eg., by TwickFolk and by Martin Simpson) it was lost but is now found…

Interesting, thanks. I found myself wondering about set-up so looked at the info and comments. A pair of SM81s into a Presonus tube pre, into Logic with compression, EQ, and reverb in a bid to recreate the sound as the player’s ears heard it ‘in the room’ - don’t mean to imply that there is anything wrong with that, but p’raps worth noting if auditing the clip to hear the sound of the sound of the instrument …

Just wondering if anyone can advise on approaches to string choices for a Shaftesbury (Del Vecchio-style) resonator guitar. In short, is it just like picking strings for a National-style biscuit bridge instrument (in which case I know what to get) or are there other factors to take into account?
Thanks

Stevie.. so you dont think one is being posted? never ever paid extra for an E ticket ... Michael any idea please? Perhaps they are going to print an eTicket for you and post it out to you? (If so, I can see how that might lead to the additional charge...)

It won’t play on my device ( iPad) Pete ps: I would still like to know what happened to the action ( height of strings above frets) after the dropped. Hi Pete, it wouldn’t play on iPad either just by clicking, but if I click and hold and download it it’ll play ok -might be worth a try on yours...

Another topic tangential post - spring is in the air. I don't think microtonal and resophonics are a good match to judge by the example, but the others I found on wood body classical with nylon strings made sense soundwise - at least to my ears H I also think the ‘classical’ number sounds fine, and in tune, I don’t understand why the Tricone sounds so uncomfortable. It may be the tuning? The nylon strung guitar is possibly in dropped D(?) and the Tricone in an open D tuning(?). If the guitar is designed to be played in standard tuning wouldn’t an open tuning lead to some odd and unwanted pitch changes? My musical knowledge sadly is not good enough to give an answer. Pete John Cage was also mentioned earlier in the thread, I often play a short part of his 4’33” at gigs. Though I don’t play it with a guitar and it really shouldn’t be played with a piano. There’s a lot of stuff from Schedier’s ‘Just National Guitar’ album on YouTube, and none of the pieces I checked out at random seemed as hard (for me) to listen to as the clip above. I suggest that the clip in question does not reflect well upon the instrument or what Schnedier can do with it. link

After listening to him playing the Minnetonka number yesterday I spent an enjoyable while taking a range of videos of him on his own and some with Hula Hut and The Seven Seas, very nice too... Here’s just a couple of the ones I enjoyed:
