Napthalene has been band in Europe since 2008, (there maybe exemptions from professional use) so I have hit a brick wall this side of the pond trying to get Crystal glass paint! Just because it is carcinogenic, toxic and flammable, what sort of a state is this! PT I'm sure the government will let us have all the poisonous substances we want after Brexit!
They may make it compulsory for some......
Can anyone get an Irish Passport if they have great, great Irish grandparents??

Hi again ! Well, that will be why the secrets to what to use and how to apply a Duco paint finish seemed to disappear with the original National company. No one doing the paint finish National probably lived long enough to pass on the secrets to the next generation !!! "Exposure to large amounts of naphthalene may cause confusion" (Source:Wikipedia but still credible) Could also explain some of the discrepancies with serial no's!

Lacquer alone is quite dangerous...any time I have done a complete guitar, I build a tent of plastic sheets in my garage to contain the overspray and fumes. OSHA certifued respirator of the proper type and active ventilation is a must. Was looking at the NRP website and found a pic of one of their "dueco" offerings. It is almost all comprised of the triangular shaped crystals that I thought were somewhat objectionable as opposed to the flowering crystal... the triangles were rough and formed sooner than the flowers which seemed to be the result of a "wetter" application. The coincidental formation of triangles and flowers was, to me, not as desirable as generating all flowering crystals. I found that sanding down the finish with some 400 and 600 grit paper gave the rough finish a nice sheen and touch while somewhat enhancing the look.

some lacquer is more dangerous than others... I wouldn't have any around an open flame for sure. It's the stuff that uses Tolulene, Methyl ethyl Ketone, or Napthalene as an evaporating vehicle that really scares me.
from the website MSDS statement : RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: Use NIOSH approved cartridge respirator to keep vapor / mist levels of hazardous ingredients (listed in Section II) below the occupational exposure limits (PEL &TLV). If exposure levels are unknown, or limits exceeded, use full facepiece air - purifying cartridge respirator for organic vapors and mists. Use filters to avoid breathing spray particles or sanding dusts. Follow respirator manufacturer’s instructions for use.
I worked with a guy who was injured pretty badly using a toluene based glue without a mask...
on that happy note, I'd bet that changing the volatile ingredients would effect the outcome of the patterns.

Hi again,
Just to clarify for those who don't know, the repro Duco finish on NRP's Dueco models, are done by Rik Besser, aka "rbe" on this forum.
