Checking out some live blues tonight with Corey Harris. Ironically, this just popped up on eBay this morning: Corey's Islander . I showed it to Corey on my phone and he got a chuckle out of it. Said he sold it years ago. He put on a great show with a mix of solo acoustic (I would have loved for that to be the entire show) blues and some electric stuff with a 5 piece band. The stuff with the band was good, kind of a fusion of jazz, blues and reggae, but it was the solo stuff that really shined. No resonators tho, just a parlor sized acoustic.

Did he play "Time"? I always imagine the look on Roger Waters' face when I hear that!

Gotta say that eBay is a fountainhead of amusement with the absurd asking prices of so many items and the creative descriptions... The Corey reso listing identifies him as a "real deal blues man"...I guess someone has to be the first real blues man with a college education and 500 grand in the bank...

Fredcapo
If you don't think Corey Harris is a real blues man because he has money and an eduction, perhaps you would define what makes a "real blues man". I would really like to know.

Uh well, real deal blues man implies to me that he is not simply a stylist or student of the blues genre, but someone that was involved in shaping and defining the genre...and maybe was truly disadvantaged and worked very hard for very little money...

Fredcapo:
Interesting definition, and thank you for replying.
Corey Harris has made a living from playing blues and African genre music, and has made and sold quite a few albums, and teaches blues.
Since you say that he is not a "real deal blues man" does that make him a "fake blues man", or perhaps a "poser?"

Whatever may or may not have been implied, I don't recall that Fredcapo wrote that CH was not a "real deal blues man", just posssibly the first that had the benefit of some priviledge or another.

Fredcapo is pointing out the irony of Harris drawing lines of what real blues 'men' are, whilst naturally including himself. Politicians do it when re-drawing electoral boundaries, to keep them in power. Harris has probably discounted many others who make a living playing blues / African music, selling albums and teaching blues - presumably white men / women. Best ignore the rhetoric, and just listen to his stuff if its your thing. TT

I agree with TT in general about the vibe I get from CH, but especially endorse his closing sentence. There is no point in pushing this. The terminology under discussion is indeterminate in absolute meaning... We each have our own interpretation. I could blather on and try to push my point but I won't. Words are not binary...I was in no way implying he was a poser or disingenuous to the music (see my photo at left for a real poser). The term was used in the eBay listing as sales puffery. I personally don't see any special provenance in a guitar used by CH, and that was the essence of my original comment.

Stevie and Deuce:
Fred is a big boy, and an intelligent man. He can take of himself. I am merely trying to understand his statements. Nothing more.
Fred, you implied that Corey Harris is not a real deal blues man because he has eduction and makes money. Imagine that, a black blues man with money and education. However, I think you regret making the statement and would like the conversation to end, so I am happy to let it end here.
Not to speak for Corey Harris, but I think these kinds of attitudes fuel his anger against the subject of whites playing and singing the blues. When a white man can say on a blues forum that education and money, and not suffering enough in life, preclude a black man from being a real deal blues man, it is certain to make him angry.

So Stevie and I shouldn't comment on fredcapo's behalf, but you can - and on Harris' behalf. TT

Let it go Izzie - this is 2016 and the world has changed dramatically since the 1920s and 1930s. You don't know what colour I am and I have been lucky enough to play amateur bass with both black and white blues guys in black and white bars and clubs in Europe and the US. It didn't bother me and it didn't bother the band members I played with. Bottom line is music is music, blues or otherwise. Let's leave it at that, shall we?

Was "Corey" Harris related to "Wee Willy" Harris I wonder...
