its not the fact that she cant hit the right notes its just that there in the wrong places (joke),she must be doing something right, got us lot talking about her good or bad. at the end of the day she does not claim to be the best,at least she is up there doing what she enjoys ,wish there were more like her,and if they look good thats even better petej

Again....I can't play like her at all, but she's not that great a player to my ears.
It seems to me she's like a marketing product, I mean she wouldn't be so popular when she would look like Angela Merkel and played like this.
oh.......I really don't have perfect ears, but when even a tonedeaf guy like me hears intonation errors, you bet they are there.

Um, any chance we can keep the discussion civil? No personal insults?
I mean, I know, it's the internet and all. But still.

" This whole squabble appears based on a false premise; namely that the overdriven bluesy punkish rock music of Ms Fish is somehow capable of direct comparison with the likes of Burnside. It's a comparison of apples and oranges. That sounds, however, is far more seasick Steve than traditional hill country or fred McDowell. 100% agree. I interpret the outputs of people like Samantha Fish, Seasick Steve, Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band and loads of others as being a postmodern reading of the Mississippi juke scene, and like many postmodern reworkings it's inherently facile and riddled with pastiche. My personal feeling is that it's a fairly disrespectful way to treat the legacy of the people who made and continue to make the music that these people borrow from - to present it as shambolic and unrefined. I never saw Fred McDowell, Booker White, RL Burnside or T Model Ford with a cigar box guitar. I'm sure if any of them really did start with them (and I think THAT is a way overstated piece of folklore) they ditched them as soon as they could. Yet somehow, that's one of the things people latch onto in their quest to display bluesiness or authenticity and to get attention. In Samantha Fish's favour, at least she only seems to pull the gimmick out of the hat for a couple of numbers rather than building her entire act on it. But at the end of the day it's showbiz. That world, and the world of the conservationist/purist can totally coexist in ignorance of each other. It's all fantastically easy to ignore

I gotta say, I'd be tempted to be more offended by a video someone else posted of Michael Messer onstage playing some tasty slide while some teenager with a turntable spun out a bunch of squawky rap-style sound-effects. Horrors!
But I'm all for people pushing the envelope, or tearing the envelope apart and stomping all over it. I'm quite certain, just from watching Burnside sing his song Peaches, that he would have found Samantha Fish quite tasty :-)
We're fortunate enough to have the original recordings of the old master blues guys. That doesn't mean music has to be buried in the box alongside them.

She's promoted because she is female, young and good looking, if people like what she does, that is fine. Not singling you out here Phil but this does neatly summarise something that is glaringly apparent from this discussion... ...nobody seems in the slightest bit interested that, of it's ilk, her voice is excellent and worthy on it's own of attention and promotion. Yet her less-than-amazing slide technique appears to render her entirely undeserving over others? Maybe just a byproduct of this being a guitar-based forum I guess

Maybe just a byproduct of this being a guitar-based forum I guess We're far too distracted by the short skirts, obviously. I wasn't too impressed by her vocals, to be honest. But then I've only seen videos of her performing live - hard to sing properly live, especially when she's forced to shout over that noisy CBG she likes to play (I'm not a huge fan of CBGs, or at least when they're electrified. I really love how creative they get though). Her singing just reminds me of tons of southern blues-boogie singers. She sings in key, at least. I'll give her that. Which is already pretty rare!

Oh ok - he was the 20+ year old kid on Michael's albums, on a turntable spinning out a bunch of rap-style sound-effects ! With Ed Genis in the middle. Here's a video - it works REALLY well IMO. TT

Yep, that's the video I saw. Not my cup of tea, I'm afraid. Maybe if Michael was wearing a mini-skirt?

Well, you can't please everyone and while like all musicians, I am always slightly hurt by negative comments about my music, I am not offended in any way that mickeyz doesn't like it .....because that sound won me and award, gave me two very successful albums, received incredible reviews, brought me many new friends....including some serious hardcore blues purists, has been played regularly on radio for the past 13 years and took us to some of the finest venues in the world. I am very proud of the music I have made with what has become known as the 'Second Mind Band' and nothing can ever take that away.
Shine On Michael.

Well, in that case, never mind the mini-skirt...
