Ok help me out here.... I saw a video on YT of Samantha Fish, Popa Chubby and Mike Zito filmed during a recent Blues Cruise.... Honestly, I don't see her having the same chops as Popa nor Zito, not even close....
For me she is just a young blonde, who knows her way around the guitar. Not even close to Bonnie Raitt.
Is she just a marketing ploy for old white guys who like the blues.... Is she a copy-cat wanna-be Taylor Swift of the blues.....
Help me out... What am I missing here.... What do you think about her?
Honestly, I see a brighter future in the blues for Husky Burnette...

Husky Burnette mistakes noise for music. George Thorogood with a hipster hat? As for Samantha Fish, every video she's in seems to be in a different place, in a different part of the country. Seems to me she's working hard, paying her dues. I'm not going to blame her for trying to be attractive while doing it. I admit that, since she's making the same type of music as this Burnette fellow, I'd rather watch her.

The way i see it is,there are a lot of really great guitarists out there but most of them are lacking a little bit of something that makes them special,i call it Mojo but the ones who have it will be remembered for ever(unless you wear short skirts)the perfect example of someone who had more than anyone else Robert Johnson dont want to make a list but considering how many great guitarists who have come and gone, there are only a handfull who really stand out.thats my view anyway. petej

I admit that, since she's making the same type of music as this Burnette fellow, I'd rather watch her. Watching with our eyes and listening with are ears - two different things. I just don't see the technique, soul or feel in Fish's playing Contrasting a 22 y/o blonde from KC (Fish) with an older, over weight Jewish guy from the Bronx (Popa Chubby). They are both very similar In that they both have a striking appearance. - although they are at opposite ends of the spectrum. that is, Each artist has a brand image that you will recall - for one reason or another. But brand image is not musicianship nor does it help you tell a story about the blues through a guitar.. Samantha's playing to me is contrived and cliche, her licks are soulless. Where are Chubby's comes from his soul, freely and naturally. He owns them whereas Fish is borrowing them almost Parrot like. I think of Fish as a songster, someone who belongs in a cover band. Can you you point me to some of her better solos?

I've seen Popa Chubby live, pretty great show. Very sweaty.
Honestly, I don't see anything very unique about Samantha Fish, other than the "being a reasonably attractive blonde in a miniskirt playing cigar-box guitar" schtick. Doesn't stop me from admiring ANYONE who gets up on stage and gives it their all.
But the LAST thing I'm interested in is yet another wanky guitar solo. If a solo lasts for longer than two bars, I'm out.

never heard of her before, so I youtubed her. I'm no where as good as she is, but I agree about missing some soul.
I did think her wearing miniskirt in every clip I saw, was kind of marketing gimmick. Hot chicks sell.....and she has some nice legs....and chops too.

marketing is everything and everywhere...wish it was not so but folks have to eat. The music scene is filled with mediocrity, and I see her as being a cut above that. She is young and appears to be getting a more mature stage personna...I see her in dresses in some newer videos. Will I ever go see her play or buy her music...No, but I don't understand why some are dissing her specifically. Tell me, how is she different from, say, Memphis Minnie, Rory Block, or Bonnie raitt at this stage in her career?

Popa Chubby isn't gonna get any more 'unattractive' - Samantha Fish will eventually. What has she got planned for then though? I'll be seeing her at my local in a few weeks - I'll let you know how the show was. TT

I don't think it really is personal to Ms Fish; I think it probably goes back to a bit of a debate in another thread ('North Mississippi blues?') and, in particular, the provocative claim, challengingly delivered, with a side of anti-purist taunts, that she plays 'Shake 'em on down' better than either Fred McDowell or R.L. Burnside. That sort of claim is pretty much bound to draw critical attention, especially so when, as recently pointed out in this thread, she is not hitting the notes (nor, I would suggest, the rhythm). As Mickeyz, more or less said (above), hats off to her for getting up there and giving it a go - and a pity if she is getting undeserved flack because of another's hyperbole...

This thread is almost comical. Some of you are coming across like a bunch of old maids.
Samantha Fish is a very young woman who has has a lot of success in her brief career. Opened for Buddy Guy, played on same stage as Johnny Winter in Europe, toured all across the US and has two records out. Pretty damn impressive for a woman "who can't hit the notes." Look at all the youtube videos of her playing live, and there are a lot of them. She is making a living and getting recognition from doing something she loves (playing the blues). How many of you can say the same?
For those who say "she can't hit the notes" or any other such comments, please post a video of your club gig and show all of us how it is done right.

Well said, bod... And really, who today, or even decades ago, is singing the blues from the heart (or empty stomach)? Performing musicians need to be a few parts actor...

I'm afraid I cannot see how any forum member's personal playing abilities (or lack of them) could have any bearing on the validity of their views on Ms Fish.
Nor can I see how an appeal to popularity can make those views less valid. As the pop charts often demonstrate, popularity is no indicator of quality.
This whole squabble appears based on a false premise; namely that the overdriven bluesy punkish rock music of Ms Fish is somehow capable of direct comparison with the likes of Burnside. It's a comparison of apples and oranges.
If you like what she does that's just fine but I see no reason to expect others to agree with what is a subjective aesthetic assessment, especially when the music is really not very comparable and you are talking to a forum packed with enthusiasts and purists...
Personally I see nothing of particular interest in what she does but happily recognise that she is doing a reasonable job of making her chosen sound.
That sounds, however, is far more seasick Steve than traditional hill country or fred McDowell.
