Dear Michael Messer Forumer,
Warm regards from Jakarta, Indonesia. My name is Dicky, I'm from Jakarta, Indonesia, and I am new to this forum, I am looking forward to make friends with you guys and wish that I could get to know better to this beautiful thing called Resonator .
So here's the thing, I'm having a slight problem with my resonator. I hope that I could make this as short as possible, I'll describe it from the start. And I really hope that you folks could give me an advice or tips to solve this one. Recently, about few months ago, I bought a Gretsch G9202 Honey Dipper resonator from the US. The guitar arrived with the strings loosened by the seller (maybe to prevent the tension from high altitude). When I tuned it up, the low strings (4,5,6) buzzed really bad it's totally unplayable. Since I'm a totally newbie to this type of guitar, I ignorantly try to fix it myself (removed the strings, opened the can, and I turned the cone's position). After I did that, the low strings wasn't buzzing anymore, but the high strings does (1,2,3). I then removed it again and checked the cone. I found that the cone is not even. It's kinda hard to explain this one without picture, it's like the cone is bent a little at some spot, and near the biscuit, so if I placed the cone at a flat surface, I could see that the biscuit is kinda slant. Again, with my little knowledge regarding this type of gear, I try to "even" the cone manually with my fingers, and I removed the biscuit from the cone, turned it so the uneven spot's location is more towards the string retainer. It might not be a recommended way to fix a resonator, a primitive way maybe, since I read from this forum that the cone should not be touched, but at that point it worked. It's playable. The only little setback is the first string buzzed / dead at 12th fret. Felt like it's okay so I didn't bother for a while.
After some time, I broke my first string, and the only spare strings that I got is a .013 gauge (the previous was a .012). So I changed the strings, tuned it up, now there're two spots of buzz / dead strings for the first string. The 11th and 12th fret. My logic is that the heavier gauge strings pushed the biscuit and the cone lower, into a state that it makes the 11th and 12th fret buzzed / dead. Now I'm bothered...
Just a little bit of projection that I made, I hope that this picture can give you a little bit of insight
So here's the questions :
1. Is it normal for the cone to be in an uneven state like I described? I know that you guys might have a problem imagining it, but I couldn't provide you with detailed pictures at this point...
2. Do you have any advice so I could fix it manually? I'm really paranoid about touching the cone right now, and just for an insight, there isn't many people here in Jakarta who I could trust to fix this type of guitar. For electrics there are lots, and I won't be so paranoid if it's about the electric, since I can do basic set up for electric myself. The most reliable (maybe) there is is about three hours drive from my place, and I don't know if I could really trust the guy... this type of guitar is not too popular in where I live.
3. Do you have any recommendation for a mounted pickup that do not need for a body modification? I'm aiming for a fishman transducer, but so far, I've got no idea on where to put the thing.
That's all for now, I guess. I really wish you guys are willing to give me an advice or tips on how to fix this. I would like to thank all of you for your help in advance. Thanks and best regards
Dicky
