Honey boy lovely shot off John Campbell ........... i really rate this guy , what a great slide player he was , with a fantastic voice to boot . A real tragedy the way he died , I think, if I can remember, from a wrong prescription given to him by a doctor for treatment he was on. I have heard of Chris Whitely a lot but have never heard any of his music ? time to check him out

For me It took a while for the penny to drop as far as Chris Whitleys music was concerned. I was very impressed by Chris Whitley's songs, and guitar tone which is very distinctive, but it didn't immediately gel for me. Once i had heard it a few times it really sank in. It is worth giving it a second listen, a third or even fourth. - It is worth trying his later solo (or perhaps more correctly near solo) tracks - in particular 'Ghost Dance' from the 'War Crime Blues' album 'Or breaking Your Fall' from 'Hotel Vast Horizon' - It really does it for me.

There is so much material to explore when it comes to Whitley, it sounds like he went through different phases with his songwriting. His vocals are almost always in that tight blues-scale realm, but I thought he went a bit more progressive with his reso playing when he started playing less slide. Hotel is a great example of that. If you haven't heard Dirt Floor, check it out...I had never even heard of reso guitars until that album came out in '98. By the way, that 1940 Style O is my most sought after holy grail tone...someday Thanks for the photos!

If anyone wants to listen to Chris Whitley for free, sign up for the ad suppported version of Spotify www.spotify.com/en/There you can hear Living with the Law, Rocket House, Perfect Day, Terra Incognita and a killer resonator version of 'I can't stand the rain' with Cassandra Wilson and Chris Whitley. Best thing is, although the music is free, the artists still get paid. And back to photos of musicians with resonators Many many more here on this link, www.wirz.de/music/resofrm.htmIncluding this bloke....

Chris Whitley's 'Dirt Floor' is a stunning piece of work! If i remember, it was recorded in one day in a Vermont barn....one guitar, one mic...one voice - amazing performance . Slide On! Ian.

The first time I heard Chris Whitely was on the track 'I Can't Stand The Rain' on Cassandra Wilson's gem of an album 'Blue Light Til Dawn'. Her voice and his playing created a truly haunting version of the classic song and made me find more from him.
But what has been playing on my mind is the strange acquisitive tendencies of reso players I justify it as one in each tuning (there being dozens) and one for luck. Is there any other explaination?

I tried the other day to upload a couple of pix but without success. Here goes again: Edit: It worked! The first pic shows my first reso (a much modified Ozark 3515) taken by my pal Glenn Smith during a concert at The Courthouse in Otley where I was support for the excellent Steve Tilston; the second was at the recent Dentdale Music & Beer Festival with my MM Lightning No. 0016... Vast clouds of Saturday night midges and mosquitoes not shown! Cheerily, Gerry C
