I managed to get a bit more done at the weekend, neck set and sanded to the desired shape, back on and body sanded ready for finish, and, of course I had to put all the bits together just to see what it was going to look like one more time! I'm a very impatient person, cant wait to do the paint (haven't decided what yet)! And I might have to do a first rough setup with the sub-standard cone that I have.

It's looking really good.
A rough set-up should be fine, but don't do any major alterations until you get the proper cone.

A rough set -up will also mean you will know what the first cone sounds like. It my be good. The great thing about the `Continental` cones is that they are all consistantly good, the standard Far eastern ones go from OK to very bad, Good luck Pete T

This cone I've got does ring, I hung it from a piece of string and hit it with my knuckle. The initial hit is a bit of a thud (probably because I don't get the knuckle out of the way very quick) but it does sound "bell like" and it has sustain. I will get a continental but I'll probably pick it up when I'm in the UK in August. Frets went on today Keith.

Hi Keith,
I can only tell you what I think of the cone you have there, and whether it rings or not means very little, it is not a good cone.
Resonator cones are very easy to copy, but to make proper ones is a whole different thing. There are only a handful of people in the world who can do it well.
Best wishes,
Shine On Michael.

Well, It's all together, strung up and action high-ish. And yes I broke the G string! I did have a panic when I put the cover plate on. The strings are awfully close to the hand rest but tuning it up pulled the cone down a little. I'm sure the neck will pull up a little and I definately want to lower the action at least another mm at the 12th (2mm at the saddle). I've strung it with 12/48 pb (that's all I have at the mo) and I have to say it sounds awsome, tons of sustain (that I thought was tricone teritory) and volume, wow! Seems well ballanced across the 5 strings that it has at the moment. I have an idea for a paint job so that'll be done after I've played it a bit and I pull it apart again. All in all, very happy. Keith. A

Keith, It looks GREAT! You have done a lovely job there. Have you ever made a guitar before? Your bridge is very high, but that is all to do with the geometry of neck angle, coverplate height, break angle....etc. A lower bridge would improve the tone and volume of the guitar. Looks great - get it painted! Shine On Michael

Hi Michael, yes I have built before. This was my latest effort, about 2 years ago. It was inspired by the Woody Mann sig Martin. I ran a workshop here in Greece, exclusively Woody for a week, 8 students. He bought his new Martin and I loved it, couldn't afford one so I set to with my toolbox! Back to the reso, I went with a 2' neck angle. In hinesight I should have drawn it all out full size but I'll know for the next one 1-1.5'. Keith.

Well, I pulled it all apart today. I wasn't happy with the neck angle and the high saddle so I shaved 50% off the wedge on the fingerboard extension and added a thin wedge to the heel. I should be able to lower the saddle by about 5-6mm. I've also started the paint. Should be finished soon.

Here it is finished, Greek Burst paintwork (suppose it could be a Greek custom)! I'm calling it the "Austerity". I'm really glad that I changed the neck angle. I think I've got the height at the saddle just right. Just want to say how much I appreciate the comments and tips, they really inspired me to get it right. I'm realy going to stick my neck out and say that it is right! ;D
