Listening to and watching a documentary “Carmine Street Guitars” @ Leeds International Film Festival
Rick Kelly and his apprentice make handcrafted guitars out of reclaimed wood from old hotels bars and churches in New York City.
The doc covers 5 days at the store with the great and the good dropping by to chat and play, and hopefully buy. Bill Frisell does a lovely version of “Surfer Girl”

That is one of the most extraordinary and infectious rhythms ever recorded by anyone. It is also extremely difficult to play and the only person I have ever heard get even remotely close, is Napolian Strickland. But Napolian didn't quite have the delicate dexterity that Fred had. Lots of Mississippi players did this song and still do, but Fred was the master of such things. Shine on Michael

wow Michael ..amazing ..is that the top of a broken bottle Napolian is using for for a slide? Jono, both Fred and Napolian are using gin bottlenecks that are pretty crudely cut, or broken off. Break the top off, maybe heat it in a fire to round off the sharp edges and away you go. Napolian was a disciple of Fred McDowell's. His music is raw, rough, primitive and fuelled by alcohol, but damn does it rock! Fred McDowell, on the other hand, was articulate, delicate and brilliant at his art. Fred McDowell is and always will be one of the definitive masters of the blues. Shine On Michael

Colin Hodgkinson--an underrated talent. Colin is a unique musician. I used to love his duo with Alexis Koerner. Shine On Michael

“Up and Rolling”, new album from North Mississippi Allstars with quests Mavis, Cedric and Duane Betts.
Good stuff, got into them a few years ago circa Black Snake Moan, and got to see them live at The Ruby Lounge, Manchester (UK) last year. Stunning!

I listen to this one on a fairly regular basis.
I came to it by chance because of that guitar. Lew would know!

One of these bands that had too much talent (except when it came to buying trousers).
