Animal, vegetable or mineral. We are all one in this magnificent cosmos we inhabit.

I have seen animals react to music in various ways and I don't believe it is even questionable. As Graeme has said, we are all one. I think what is also interesting about music (organised sounds) is that we are only at the very tip of understanding what it can do. On a basic level, the different affect on our brain of a major or minor scale, or aggressive versus gentle pieces of music. I believe that music has much more power than we are aware of and that using it for entertainment is just the tip of the iceberg. We do use it for various therapy treatments, but even that is only a very basic use of it.
Hmmmm....

I often wonder,as we all do,what it is about a certain piece of music that 'gets' to us. On a surface level it's often just pure nostalgia but as you say Michael we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg. It's also a balm as seen in the number of people wearing headphones in everyday life or tradesmen who need a radio to work effectively. My sporadic attempts at meditation (I can never quite empty that hyperactive mind of mine) always seem to go better with appropriate background music. I love waking up to Radio 3 --it seems to me the best time of day to absorb music.

Don't forget dance! The combination of music and dancing is one of the great pleasures of life. Often when I watch dancing, as well as marvelling at how good the dancing is, I also wonder, why do we do it! I can't help but think of display rituals of animals (cleverly bringing it back to the thread here) and our desire to impress with a quick turn of an ankle! I'm sure there is much deep writing and discussion on the subject, but a good knees up to a good tune always makes me feel better!
Best wishes to you all, John

...if you've ever stood in the middle of The Kop singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone' whilst LFC are getting prepared to beat Manchester United, watching fully grown men with tears in their eyes, you'll understand the power of collective music.

I remember when visiting my Grandparents in Richmond Surrey in the 70,s them saying that the man who wrote Grandad (Herbie Flowers) lived in the adjoining flat/house. Never got to find out but that tune of his has special importance as a result.

Herbie wrote "Flanker" too but you won't find that gem on the 'tube. One day I'm going to test his wrath, convert it from vinyl and hang it on YouTube. One day.

Funny to think the guy who wrote Grandad is the same guy who played bass on Walk on the Wild Side. Must have played bass on hundreds of other hits as well though.

We are all familiar with the dog howling along to the harmonica but I remember talking to a dairy farmer many moons ago in his milking parlour whilst on a health visit and asking him why he had radio 2 playing loudly to his cows. He explained that he always milks the cows whilst Terry Wogan is on and then went on to berate the memory of a locum herdsman that milked his cows while the owner was on holiday. The milk yield was significantly down for that week when he checked the milk records on his return and it baffled him until he checked the radio in the milking parlour which had been retuned to Radio 1 in his absence !! Happy days Tim

Remember the Balham Alligators? Great band. Used to see them at the Half Moon Putney. They had a dog that slept in a corner of the stage but woke up to howl along with the bands version of Old Shep! What a show!
Best wishes to you all,John
