I thought he used Corcidin bottles? The Flaschenmeister can confirm or otherwise about those pill bottles?

I think this neatly sums up that fretting too much about slide materials and whether they affect the tone, it's way more important to actually be a good player. TT

I suppose it’s ok on an electric where the ‘tone’ comes from coils magnets and numerous effects pedals.

True wot you say TT, but I'm one of the NOT such good players so am always looking for the holy grail of slides...and strings and capos and pups and picks both thumb and fingerpicks and books and DVD's.....you get the picture Lol!
Best wishes to you all, John

TT I do agree that you have to be a good player to get a good tone, but I disagree about materials and whether they matter. I know very little about Derek, but I have never heard of a great slide player that isn't fanatical about the material their slides are made from. Shine On Michael

I’m sure I have read somewhere (possibly an interview with Honey Boy ??) that Elmore James used old valve (for some reason these are called tubes in the US) covers. These are usually very thin tin plated steel or aluminium, not the best things for tone or sustain! Pete

Ken nailed it perfectly ~ what tone you lose through using an inferior slide material can be put back into the pot by utilising outboard amplification (pickups / pedals / amplifier settings etc)...no serious slide guitarist would use pyrex, thin-walled ceramic slides or lightweight metal slides when playing resonator / acoustic guitars 'unplugged', or directly into a microphone without outboard assistance. On the subject of D.T's pyrex pill bottle slides, he is indeed endorsed by Dunlop and has his own 'Signature' bottle available...but it's been mentioned in hushed tones on several groups by someone allegedly close to the band that he uses vintage Coricidin bottles (not the pyrex 'Signature' bottles) when playing live - one of the tell-tale signs apparently is at the finale of a show where he'll toss his bottle slide into the audience....but he's swapped it over before the beginning of the last number - look closely and see if you can spot this happening Slide On! The Flaschenmiester.

Son House is an extreme and almost unique example. Son was very fussy about the slides he used and according to Louisiana Red, you had better not touch one of Son's slides.
