Here are a pair of photos of B.K Turner, better known as "Black Ace." He was a solo performer during the 1930s in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, playing his Style 2 squareneck tricone using a square medicine bottle as a bar. He recorded an album for Arhoolie in 1960 -- definitely worth a listen! -- before dying on cancer in 1972:

Heres another - may be worth copying before the listing disapears. Its always interesting to look at the photos on eBay - I don't do it regularly, but its good to look every so often. I think that this is a great sontrast to the 'ol Big Hands' photo of the guy with the Style O sitting on his car

Hi Folks Regarding the "Hicks from the Sticks' they were (clockwise from top centre) John B Allshouse, Abby Neal, Gilbert Neal, Leona Allshouse, and Walt Neal. Gilbert is playing a green wooden National. I bought the Style O from the family in 1999 but Leona was still playing occasionally on her other National at the age of 87. Cheers Davey

I'm sorry - I think I did a blank post, but I was interested in photo of the "Hicks from the Sticks." Leona Allshouse was my aunt and I would appreciate a good quality scan of that photo if possible. I have one that was taken at the same time but isn't the same (she's standing in the back). As for Abbie (Esther) Neal, she was a cousin and died in 2004. Here is an obituary (it should be Brookville, not Brookfield). www.newoldtimes.appalachianmusic.net/Archives/Transition021504neal.htmIt was fun finding the picture of my aunt (and uncle) here. Thanks to Brad Bechtel (Wellvis) - another wonderful photograph has turned up. This one needs no introduction as all that is known is written on the photo. Please keep hunting for these photos, they are wonderful. Thank you, Shine On, Michael.

Hi Michael,
Great photo. Is that a round neck Triolian? If so, do you think that the high nut has been added or were some Triolians originally built with round necks but set up at the factory as "Hawiian" guitars?

Hi Robn,
Yes it is a Triolian.
I have seen quite a few round neck Nationals & Dobros with 1930s nut-raisers that have been there since the 30s. When I got 'The Harry' - Harry Watson's own style 4 round-neck Tricone, it had not been touched since Harry used to play it, and it had a nut-raiser. It also had a factory fitted bone bridge-saddle.
Some of the greatest lap-steel players of National & Dobro guitars used round-neck instruments with nut-raisers. Two that spring to mind are King Benny Nawahi and Bashful Brother Oswald.
I don't think I have ever seen a factory-fitted high-nut on a round-neck National. It is hard to remember all these details!

Anyone have any info on Sheerson resonator guitars built in Los Angeles from 1932 to 1942? I have a small wood bodied resonator with a National style cone that Marc Schoenberger says is a Sheerson. Also...anyone have any label/decal artwork/images for these guitars? Mine sounds better than any resonator guitar I've had over the last 40 years. Hope to hear from someone soon...Cheers!...Blind Brand X...AKA Ragtime Ralph!!!
