My local tree surgeon has just given me a large ( 4” across) piece of box. There is probably enough to make a box saddle for every resonator in the country! So what will be the best way to season it? Normally I would wax the ends and air dry it for 5 or 6 years ,cut it roughly to size and give it another year. I am 72 which means I’d be 80 before I could use it. So what to do? Should I just pass it on ( there are some wood turners who would give their eye teeth for it) ? Pete

I use a G6th tuning. B D E G B D. I like having GBD on top as I am mostly an open G player. The intervals of the bottom 5 strings are the same as the top 5 of C6th which many use. Pete

So here it is. If I was starting from scratch there are a few things I would have changed but it turned out pretty good. Pete

So how am I going to celebrate? Haggis for supper? No, out comes the Burns guitars, and off to tonight’s Blues Jam at the old Tall Trees Pub, ( now renamed Hanks Dirty, what sort of name is this for a pub? ) I will only be playing one, the TR2 on the right as you look at it Pete

Someone on the forum just got a 7 string . I think I have started a similar thread before, sorry for any repetition. As a (mainly) open G player I have always tuned my 6 string lap steel with G.B.D on the top 3 strings . I love the 6th chords many steel players use so I put an E on the 4th and B and D on the 6 an 5. With a 7 string I use G.B.D.E.G.B.D. How has this got to do with C6th? A close look at the 5th fret will reveal all If you ignore the top string you have C6, jump over the middle string and it’s standard Dobro.

Hi Pete, I've got a tele with the 'ashtray' bridge cover that may do the job if compatible. That’s very kind to offer, I think I have a pickup for this one, will pm you about a possible future build. Pete

So the big bridge has gone, and I have a Tele Style bridge. Of coarse I will now need a scratch plate to cover the bridge and pickup holes , but this is much more straightforward than packing the pickup up, putting a wedge under the finger board( to keep the strings parallel with it) . Pete

Where can I find the threads about the different guages and types of metals and their differences? Not sure there is one place where you can find this information. I know when I made a metal body ( this was before the forum started) I just measured the thickness of my National’s top and made the whole thing that thick( it turned out a bit heavy). Hopefully someone on the forum will have some specifications that will be better than mine Pete

Some of you may have noticed that I was trying to get rid of a couple of incomplete lap steels. One ( when it’s got pickups etc. is going to a new home but there is a bit of messing around to do first! The bridge at the moment is a monster made from an old solid brass door handle. My original idea was to use it as a test rig, so there is room to fit a very large pickup, it is now going to have a Fender style one which is much shorter than a humbucker. my first idea was to keep the bridge and put the pickup in a raised wooden block ( which I made) Two problems, the block is very close to the holes drilled for the vol/tone . Also it’s good to keep the strings parallel with the fret board and to do this would mean a very high nut, with more friction and possibly tuning troubles. I have decided on a more radical solution. more tomorrow...

I gave up and ordered two replacement magnets from Lollar! It might be good to find someone who will experiment with the old magnets 🧲. Pete

Welcome to the forum Chuck H. Some years ago I built ( or rather helped build) a couple of metal body resos. Luckily my workmate was an aircraft technician, so he did a lot of the metal work. I hope your project goes well and you post some pics. Good luck Pete T

Hi to sbrennan. Razorbill has got the one in the earlier pic. The other one is less finished , happy for you to have it if you still want it. There was some chipping around the head so a little filler was used and a coat of spry paint to seal the end grain. It’s built for a short 22 1/2” scale and for cast type m/heads (3/8” holes) I also made this as a possible left handed model, but I don’t think the shape should be a problem. Pete

I have a couple of lap steel bodies I made a few years ago, if you are handy with a screwdriver and have a some spare parts around you can have one for the postage ( probably under £10) Will post a pic Alternatively I could put a pickup,m/heads controls etc on it . But it would then be £90+ p&g, so £100

Some might remember me posting a clip of me ( unusually on the harmonica) and my friend Ranjan on slide guitar. Another ‘string to his bow’ is classical South Indian music. Here is a full concert of him and some other great players in India over Christmas. The music starts about 5 minutes in, that introduction is mainly in Tamil , not a language I understand! www.youtube.com/live/eWOEk5DIwQo?si=viU6dVwVvsYkRmlpPete
