Harriet is right with this.It is not what You play it is what You leave out.A paraphrase of Miles Davis I think ?.RL Burnside his right hand is phenominally good.

Michael is a master musician-I think he may make a cardboard box strung with elastical bands sound wonderful .But I agree beautiful sounding Collings.

Izzydunne,She really doesn`t sound better than Fred or any other of the musician I mention on"this song".I do not think that is realistic,I think few will agree with you-You enjoy her fine,We agree to disagree. As for RL taste i cannot comment-I never know him and as much as RL is admired by me it would not change my opinion of Samantha.I think its not real to compare her even for this"one song".
Not hill country musicians but then"shake em on down" is not a "hill country"song-i think first version was recorded by Bukka -not a "hill country"musician.I suppose Samantha better than Bo`s/tommy`s/Bukkas version too?.I never post Fred or RL because we are familiar with them. For Me I`ll take any of these versions (and many others)over Samantha`s. Did You know that Fred McDowell considered "Shake em on down"to be a kind of signature tune for himself-his knickname was"Shake em".Myself I think saying that Samantha is better than Fred even on this one tune is a knock at Fred McDowell.

Izzydone.I do not think anyone can beat Fred McDowell version of Shake`em on down.We all like different thing.Fair enough if you like Samantha Fish but why build her up by trying to knock at masters of the genre.Ther are many fine version of shake`em-Tommy McClennan,Bukka,Big Joe,Fred etc..Samantha has a long way to go.OK she doing her thing and if you like it fine.Space for us all.But let us be realistic.

Yes with blueshome i agree. For me the north/hill styles seem different.

I wonder if North Mississippi sound is more style than actually regional thing. Many North Mississippi artists were from hernando and nesbit etc..For example Robert Wilkins,Frank Stokes,Jim Jackson,Joe Callicot,Garfield Akers etc..These artists recorded very early and songs range from hard blues to ragtime/novelty songs etc..More than just the one chord drone style we have now. I think Akers and Wilkins record some great early examples of the style.

I am very lucky to be seeing Wolf twice live in 1960`s with Hubert.Once Hubert had the Bartolini the other I think he play a white Stratocaster.Oh,He sounded fabulous playing both.He used Fender amps when i saw him live. Can`t remember model though. He and Willie Johnson are my favorite electric blues guitar men.

When I first heard these PEG LEG recordings I was so sad.I had for many years been a fan and they seemed so weak. When you hear the circumstance to surround the making of them though they make you even sadder. His latter life was so hard for him.I still own a copy of record and will always keep it. For Johnny I agree with Zak,maybe not the standard of his earlier recordings but you can hear a life lived in this recording. We can learn much from that I feel. EGGY.

Relearning Tommy mcclennan for me.Years ago i learn to play his songs now i am revisiting tyhem.Relearn for some and just to brush up on others. The quality of bluebird cd is great and you can hear ever note/clank/bang/creak of Tommy`s forceful picking.I never can tell why many critical reports say Tommy couldn`t play. His playing is even criticised in cd note?!. All i know i feel he plays great guitar and what a voice.I will have much fun with this. eggy Attachments:

revisiting Tommy McClennan.I learn a lot from his recordings several years ago and now i will be relearning many songs. This is a favourite version to me of the"catfish blues".Never can i understand why Tommy is considered a "bad"player.I think he plays very wonderfully.

I don`t feel virtuoso make something good or sometimes worthwhile.I think Hutto is amazing.I love Rory saw him many times he was always great and give 110 per cent. What you like best is individual choice but virtuoso for me is not equal to good all times.

For much same reason as Michael I prefer 12 fret. But either guitar you will not go wrong with.
