I just read the sad news on Stefan Wirz's website that the great slide guitarist Sam Mitchell died in Liverpool on June 15th of a heart attack. Sam recorded in the late 60s as part of the British acoustic 'blues boom' and later made several influential albums for Kicking Mule. In the 80s and 90s he made several albums with a group called The Sandmen and issued a solo CD in 2000 called simply Resonating. Sam spent many years battling alcoholism but his recordings show a master at work. May he rest in peace.

I am so sad to hear that news. At our Swindon Blues Weekend only a few weeks ago, Sam's name came up in conversation several times because we had the pleasure of the company of Dragan Ruzic aka Homesick Mac, who recorded and performed on many occasions with Sam. Mac played some of Sam's songs at Swindon and as always, spoke highly and very fondly of him as a musician and a friend.
A master musician has passed and I'm so pleased I had the chance to meet Sam and to listen to his music.

I got to see Sam perform, but once, back in 1979 at Leeds University during the great progressive rock scare, he was supporting John Martyn. Sam was an awesome stage presence, and an outstanding slide-player. I was 17, and it was only the third time I'd seen a Dobro/National in the flesh...
RIP indeed
