I heard this morning that Sam Mitchell passed away from heart failure in Liverpool on Friday 16th June 2006. Sam was a wonderful musician and through his solo albums and tutorial recordings on Kicking Mule Records, he influenced and educated slide guitarists worldwide. In the mid to late 1970s when I first started playing slide, Sam's recordings, along with Stefan Grossman, Woody Mann and one or two others, were a major influence on numerous budding acoustic blues guitarists. They were the only people teaching this type of playing and were the trailblazers of the acoustic guitar tutorial industry. Sam's contribution still stands as a great body of work. Shine On Michael

Sad to hear about Sam. He was an amazing player & his last album "Resonating" is brilliant - probably enhanced by the memories of him playing several of the numbers live at Bluesweek 2001. Shine on Sam.

I have just seen your message about Sam. He was a great player and man. Even though he suffered a lot of illness in his life he could always play his guitar and sing as well as any of the greats. I will always remember him as a great friend and, as one of my early influences, and a great inspiration. He is up there now with my other friend John Jackson jamming and playing to the angels. Goodbye Sam. Jawbone. ( over in France ).
