Hi Michael, I heard your "Hummingbirds in my Soul'" on the Paul Jones show a few days ago, and I was totally blown away by your playing, also, because I am a HUGE fan of Captain Beefheart fan. Tell me, did you actually meet up with Don Van Vliet to record it? Or is it an old recording of him? I read that he suffers from MS and had totally retired from the music buisness, which is such a shame. You must have been overjoyed to work with him. I know I would be!
Best of luck at the blues festival in Memphis
Jack

Hi Jack,
Thanks! Much appreciated. Me too.....I love Captain Beefheart. That recording of Hummingbirds In My Soul features the talents of Louie Genis scratching with a Captain Beefheart LP record. It was part of a four song live session that we recorded for the BBC blues show last April and was broadcast in September. If you can't track down a copy of the session I am sure we could arrange to get a copy to you. We are just working towards starting a new album, so watch this space! You should contact the Paul Jones Show office and ask them for a copy of the session, they might send you a CD. It is always good for the producers of that show to get feedback from listeners, that is the only way they can tell if their programming works!
Shine On, Michael.

Hi, I will definatly write off to the Paul Jones show for a CD, I recorded it on tape at the time, but CD's are better anyway. Do you know if Van Vliet himself has heard the song? As he has worked with some great slide players (e.g. Gary Lucas) and I am sure he would love it too.
Thanks again
Jack

Add Ry Cooder to the list of great slide players Beefheart has played with, Ry played on "Safe as Milk"

Just listened to safe as Milk with Ry, it having been at the bottom of my tape drawer for yonks, still sounds awaesome. Didnt know the Captain was ill, he was a major influence on my playing while everyone else around me was into Indie jangle or speed metal. Ry is a genius. Id love his life, playing and facilitating the recording of some great musicians from around the world, and invariably taking a back seat to the proceedings too. His stuff with Ali farke Toure is ace, his Cuban stuff is wonderful too.
Currently have many guitars/instruments, but no resonator as yet, but that is about to be addressed. Picking up a budget reso/dobro very soon, which I intend to fettle and upgrade as funds allow. Will add to this forum as opportunities/queries arise. For electric slide I use an old cheapo Japanese Top Twenty, necks were awful, but those cheapo pick-ups just sing!!!! Acoustic slide catered for by an old EKO 12 string with only six strings tuned to openG, but less than good, cant wait till I can afford the reso......
