What do you think of the Johnson Delta Blues round neck guitar? If you have played one please respond.

The Johnson Delta Blues is a Dobro-style resonator guitar. Somewhat confusing, as Dobros are not usually associated with Delta Blues, especially when being marketed. This is not a National-style guitar, it is a Dobro. The two are quite different. Dobros are usually marketed towards country and folk musicians, not to blues players. Johnson guitars are part of the AXL network in Shanghai and from looking at the blurb on their website and the name of this guitar, I have a feeling they were somewhat influenced by my MM guitars, but without proper knowledge of their product or their potential buyers. I am sure it is an okay guitar for the price at around £200. I think it has been discontinued, as in is currently unavailable on most websites. I have never seen or played one, but at that price you will probably find it needs some setting up and cleaning up. But, if it's cheap it may be worth buying. The one in the photo, which I got from Amazon.co.uk is understrung through the tailpiece, this means that the neck angle is incorrect and to make it playable they have had to string it the wrong way. As I said....if it's cheap it may be a good buy. I hope that is helpful. Shine On Michael

Axl dropped the Johnson name, as far as I know -- they bought the rights to the Recording King name. I don't know when they made the switch, but I still see some ebay sellers trying to get rid of their old stock.
I have an old Johnson AXL-998, metal reso, very well made all in all, especially since it's a pretty early Chinese guitar, probably from 2000.

They brought the brand back to life for a while in recent years, but it had had its day. Recording King is AXL and is a new branding for the same stuff.
I know most of the Shanghai resonator network, it is a small scene over there.
The owner of the factory that manufacture my guitars was an AXL employee that went on his own.

I had one of those roundneck Delta Blues some years ago - picked it up very cheap, replaced the not-so-great-sounding original cone with a Quarterman & it sounded really good; the neck was on the skinny side tho - they often seem to be on the cheaper resos ..
